The true story of Germany's most famous anti-Nazi heroine is brought to thrilling life in Germany's official Foreign Language Film selection for the 2005 Academy Awards. Sophie Scholl stars Julia Jentsch in a luminous performance as the young coed-turned-fearless activist. Armed with long-buried historical records of her incarceration, director Marc Rothemund expertly re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl's life: a heart-stopping journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence. This is just a great story. The form of the film is mostly so-so, at least until the final moments, which through some crafty editing and camera placement add to the impending dread. However, the significant element here is the actual story itself, as the film displays a character who does not simply criticize and tear down, but has some larger purpose that drives her, some positive vision of the world that is profoundly humanist and interestingly, informed by her faith.

Amazing, interesting and drama war-movie. Some scenes are really worth-watching especially at the end of the movie. I was amazed to see how a nazi-court worked at WOII.

Standard, plain and correctly produced German holocaust film. From the techs to the acting, everything is adequate. Nothing more.

The entire thing is basically an hour and a half of interrogation, but it's still extremely well acted, and surprisingly tense and powerful. It's also interesting to see a Nazi resistance movie that barely even mentions the holocaust and doesn't have a single Jewish character. The fact that this is based VERY closely on a true story (some lines came directly from the transcripts)makes this movie even better. There is no attempt to overdramatize or "hollywoodize" any aspect of the story.

Well-acted, generally engaging true story of a young German woman sentenced to death for her involvement with an anti-Nazi resistance movement. She's an admirable character, and from what I've read almost all of this story is true (if not in precise actuality, at least in spirit). All the scenes on their own are fine, although they don't seem to add up to much. Still, it's good to see this relatively unexplored side of the Nazi situation.

The superb acting by both Julia Jentsch (as Sophie Scholl) and Gerald Alexander Held (as Robert Mohr) drives this powerful and moving film. The interrogation scenes with them, which is the bulk of the film, are full of tension and drama. The restrained direction by Marc Rothemund keeps the focus firmly on the story, where it should be.I hope that this film brings light to this courageous young woman's stand against this monstrous regime.

To say it's bad would be to disregard the extremely compelling story, the very effective pacing and the rather solid writing. On the other hand, those great things are severely hobbled by a slew of offputting directorial choices. The handheld camerawork and lighting don't give immediacy and realism, they just make everything look cheap and stagey. The line delivery is good, but the non-verbal acting is silly. There's also horrible use of music cues. A wasted opportunity.

A film that begs the audience to reflect upon their own courage and strength of character in light of this young heroine's daring story.

Very powerful film.Impressive to think that people so young stood up to the tyranny of Nazi Germany armed only with leaflets.Depressing to also think about how futile their stand was and how it could only lead to one conclusion - their deaths. I suppose it's harsh to call their death's futile as the rest of us can look back and realise that there were good people ready to stand up and be counted, small consolation for the person actually getting beheaded though I should think. Superb performanc

Tense, concise, and well made, though Rothemund doesn't do a lot to put a stamp on the story; it's all a little ordinary. Maybe that's for the best. Jentsch is near-perfect, her remarkable control imbuing the barely perceptible tics that occasionally flash across her stoic face with deep truth and meaning. As her interrogator, Held is a worthy match, layered and incisive. The story can't help but get an emotional reaction, but two great performances and taut writing ratchet it up that much more.

It's tough to connect with people who are being so doggone stoic. Nothing extremely powerful until the closing shot. Good use of a motif, though.

How could someone possibly have been so courageous? In a way this movie also illustrates what a curse it is to have an open mind.
