This is an absolutely astounding animated movie with an interesting story rooted in a deep and rich mythology that I, unfortunately, know nothing about. That might be one of it's strong suits, but it's also a detriment, there were times that I couldn't help but feel lost at references to mythological ideas that might be mundane to an Irish person, but were completely foreign to me. Yet, enough is explained that I exuberantly enjoyed what I did understand, even if not all of it.

Once again (as in The Secret of Kells), the animation is simply astounding. Moore has a way of creating images characterized by openness. That is, the world of this film always feels open with possibility...one never knows what is coming next. The story here was more emotionally satisfying than that in Kells, as narrative and theme come together beautifully in the final act. The haunting music only adds emotional resonance to the mythology of the piece without seeming overbearing. Magnificent.

A young girl is a selkie (a kind of human-seal hybrid), just like her mother, and when she is prevented from fulfilling her duties to the spirit world, she takes ill; her brother must take her on a long journey which leads them through the heart of Ireland's myths. Gorgeously animated little tale, a little shaky in terms of character but rich in magic and color. Some may find the theme of parental abandonment (the curse of the selkie) unsettling, but it's handled with sensitivity.

The parts of the plot that relate to its fantasy elements get a bit muddled at times, but Moore nails the most important character moments, and his film has a lot of heart.

This was absolutely spectacular, beautiful in every way. At first I thought I was going to be too frustrated by the characters to give this a good review, but how wrong I was. The characters are actually ridiculously well-written - they're supposed to be frustrating initially, and the organic way in which they grow and learn from their experiences is far beyond what most animated movies manage. The visuals, pacing, and music are also completely stunning, and fit together perfectly.

A magical adventurous story based on Irish folklore with a bit of a melancholic air about it. The art style, soundtrack, and the colors altogether create a truly stunning and ethereal effect on the movie.

I saw this at the cinema recently, and all I can say is...''wow''. Such a beautiful movie. The animation is some of the best I've seen in a long time. Great to see traditional animation, as opposed to CGI, being used in a new animated movie. And I love how the animation looks like it's from a picture book. The Irish mythology is so great, this movie makes me want to find out more about it. In short, this was the best new movie I've seen in a long time. Recommended for all humans

I'm sure this is good for young kids, but I feel like I was watching every cut scene from an indie game in a row. The art is beautiful but I've seen it around for years, also in indie games. This is now what I'm calling the real' 'indie game the movie'

A melancholic fairy tale brought to life with gorgeous 2D animation and a beautiful soundtrack. Reminds me a lot of classic Disney films of the 1940s and 1950s. Had me engrossed from the first moments and didn't take one wrong step.

SotS is arguably a better idea for a film, than a film itself. The marriage of irish folklore, gorgeous animation ( although not to every ones taste, I wager ) and fairly typical emotional storylines should be more involving than it actually is on screen. For someone not versed in Irish Folklore, despite getting a lot of the references, I felt a little sidelined and that was to the detriment of my overall enjoyment of the movie. I rarely ask for more exposition, but it might have helped in SotS.

Its realy amazing when its comes to visuals and the musics. Even ı and my family a little napped with all those great songs. Loveable characters, mythological reflection to our characters. A bit unfocused and casual story but still get you there. My biggest concern and disgrace about this movie is always try to make a bridge make a connection between celtic myth/celtic paganism and Catholic christianity. It was disturbing the all old, mysterious mythological theme. Ben is the only character.

With a stronger emphasis on narrative than there was on "The Secret of Kells", "Song of the Sea" tells a truly lovely and mature story (once again based on Celtic lore) without having to sacrifice any of its breathtaking animation.

Just as good, if not better than Secret of Kells. I can't wait for more from this studio. It's a lot more of an emotional, human story this time. Set in modern times, but with a fairy-tale-like theme similar to something like Peter Pan or Wizard of Oz.

Sweet natured, clearly deeply felt fable simmers in rich Irish folklore, giving a great sense of time and place rare for an animated feature, but there’s a cold rigidity to the characters, and even certain plot points, that makes this difficult to connect with emotionally, especially once the story’s overarching themes of loss and grieving come to the fore. On the fence regarding the animation – it’s effective for the story its trying to tell, but certainly not conventionally attractive.

A very beautiful film - visually and musically - telling an honest and heartfelt story about coming to terms with bereavement, a process that is truly unique for every individual that goes through it - but is also a very strange process. The super cute and innocent presentation of Saorsie certainly helps melt one's heart too. A stunning film: I had to pause at different parts to marvel at the beautify of the animation and gaze at the imagery - breathtaking. Highly recommended.

A lovely little movie that enchants with its combination of truly beautiful 2D animation and powerful, abstract storytelling. The visuals manage to benefit optimally from their flatness, often depicting scenes simultaneously from a bird's-eye perspective and from the side, which results in some surreal images. The story seems to be woven from pure emotion, a quality that only briefly weakens in the second act. A perfect example of a true family movie; watchable for adults and children alike.

The summary is misleading, the story is more of Saoirse's brother Ben, than of the selkies. A wonderful story, art, and songs. Worth watching. Warning: Ben verbal treatment of Saoirse at the beginning borders on verbal abuse. Strong character development of Ben, so worth watching.

The story, art, and larger themes are perhaps just a click or two below The Secret of Kells, but Song of the Sea spends more time than its predecessor on character development, offering a slightly more satisfying experience. This may be nitpicking, though, because both are lovely to look at, although this film is a lot cutesier, which may be an improvement or not.

A beautiful animation in an utterly charming style; the story is original, breathtaking and slightly melancholy whilst drawing in transfixing elements from the original Irish mythology, and the use of Gaeilge throughout the film is endearing but not overpowering: it shows a national pride whilst keeping the film completely accessible for mere English speakers like myself. All in all, a solid picture, and I'd rec it to everyone.

Looking at the visual style of the movie, I had the feeling, I get something I have always wanted, but never knew I wanted it. The drawing style and the music are so beautiful that it bought me immediately. Even if there were no story at all, I would have had an excellent time just by looking and listening to the art. The story is also very good, even if there was one very unexplained turn around the middle, it's still excellent. This movie is a must watch for everyone!
