Song at Midnight

The basic story line of this Chinese horror film resembles The Phantom of the Opera. However, by situating the story against the context of warlords, Song at Midnight injects a heavy dose of social criticism.

A 'follow the bouncing ball' HORROR MOVIE!!! Double horror! Extremely haunting visuals and with songs.... as if it was a Bollywood movie! Talk about culture clash! The Chinese soundtrack didn't match the the creepy images and close to kills the scary atmosphere! But there is something about this movie that makes it amusing. Sometimes thrilling. This has the story of Phantom of the Opera, the atmosphere of Dracula and the ending of Frankenstein! This is a true piece of oddity!

Was a bit of a slog but definitely some hallucinogenic sequences way ahead of their time and impressive social commentary for the time as well. Hard to shit on, other than its a bit too long.

An interesting variation of the Phantom of the Opera story. The music was good and the story interesting and The Phantom was ghoulish in a good was, equal parts Quasimodo and Phantom. The nationalism sprinkled through out arn't too in your face until the last shot of the movie.
