The film only truly gets interesting when Louis and Samedi go to New York, and reveals a much more ambivalent and ambiguous perspective on whether the forces of globalization and capitalism can ever really be escaped in this era. The moment when Louis talks about the massive amounts of debt he has taken on to provide for the Bayaka, and his inability to repay those debts, was especially intriguing; this man who left the world to escape all the old systems has only ended up more enmeshed in them.
