Son of a Gun

The most memorable part of this generic prison/crime hybrid from Down Under is the comment section on the film's IMDb page where a gaggle of modern-day Oscar Wildes ass-spank each other regarding the value of 6 bars of gold. Or was it 6 kilos of gold? Or was it weuneudg7wei6gejkswneui...Son of a Gun.

Son of a Gun is wonderfully named but ultimately a very generic and safe crime movie. It has a brief prison break sequence, but it's mostly about the aftermath of a heist and the double-crossing that inevitably occurs. It's fun because it's crime, and crime is inherently thrilling, but thanks to its generic plot and characters that are barely defined, let alone deep, is unmemorable and never reaches any sort of great heights. It's fun in the moment but you'll forget about it almost instantly.

I found a lot to like in Son of a Gun. Brenton Thwaites, who I've never seen before, played a minor criminal who gets caught up with Ewan McGregor's character, one of the most notorious criminals in Australia. Once out Thrwaites' character starts running errands with the objective of getting McGregor's character out of jail. Along the way JR, Thrwaites' character, falls in love with a young Russian girl who works for McGregor's boss. The end has a twist and it was very intriguing throughout.

Pretty run-of-the-mill in most places but enjoyable enough to watch.

You can see all the twists and turns coming a mile away, and you won't give a shit about the two leads. It's important to have a third dimension as a character in a movie. This movie lacked plenty of attributes essential to a movie that grips you. Maybe Ewan McGregor was doing a friend a favour when he agreed to this roll.

A reasonable caper film overall entertaining for a lazy Sunday afternoon. It's always nice to see a film placed somewhere other than the United States, love Australia.

Prison gangs... threat of male rape... a prison break... initiation into high-flying criminal underworld... a "daring" heist... one female speaking part (a Russian model/mule in need of saving from her life of crime)... This is one-dimensional, unintelligent, hetero male fantasy garbage from an idiot-first-time-filmmaker who thinks he's making a "badass-but-smart" movie. But Brenton Thwaites gets shirtless a lot, and his ass out...
