If I hadn't seen anything written by Neil LaBute before, I'd probably rate it higher. It's not rotten... but, to me, the material he presents (again) here isn't fresh anymore, either.

For a 90 min film, Some Girl(s) feels much longer than it is. While the premise had me intrigued, the film didn't hold my attention due to a middling script and some uneven performances. Brody was decent, but doesn't pull off enough charm to balance the inevitable prick he plays. Watson and Kazan were great, though their screen-time does highlight the overall weakness of the plot and writing.

Apparently, impending marriage is akin to a 12-step program--Brody feels he must go make amends. If you're going to film a play, you need actors with MUCH better craft than this. Things aren't helped by the fact that LaBute doesn't seem to have much of an ear for dialogue...in fact, the dialogue seems improvised--not in the spontaneous way, but in the "fumbling and amateurish" way. The "twist" in the last 5 minutes makes Brody seem, almost incredibly, like an even bigger douche than before.

...of varied likability, a decent'ish guy, and lots of words mostly salting their game. *Preview*: #13#, exp-3*, story, cast, R2.
