Stupid movie everyone knows Han Solo won the Falcon in a game of Corellian Spike, not traditional Sabacc. That’s why he has those dice, what kind of amateur nonsen - oh this is why I’m alone.

In concept, this should have been scrutinized to oblivion by fans with their own rigid ideas of what a Han Solo movie would be. But in practice, the flick felt like a fun romp with no one involved weighed down by any pretense. It's far less space opera than the main series and much more space heist. A change of tone every once in a while is just fine by me. Things like this might even win over some unbelievers.

I can see where some could be turned off by this. I had to watch it twice as I was unsure about it the first time. After that, I was able to get past things like the pacing. It is slower than some other SW movies. Still, it is not boring. Ehrenreich was a decent Solo and Glover was a great Lando! I personally thought both the score and cinematogrphy were excellent. Did anyone ask for this? Of course not. So what. No one asked for the last 3 either. It's perfectly acceptable entertainment.

Ehrenreich makes for a fine Solo, and this is an okay Solo film. If all the 'controversy' in The Last Jedi' baked your noodle, this is the perfect Star Wars film to calm you down. It's very middle of the road and has a few moments of that vibe of old (a musical duo made my day). It's ugly as sin, and so reverse engineered that I didn't learn anything new about the Solo character, but I did learn that in the Star Wars universe, no matter how far characters fall, it will never kill them.

Howard is a functional director and he has directed a functional Star Wars film. But very few moments throughout exceed being functional and his most striking artistic touch is the baffling decision not to light the characters properly in so many scenes. A shame, because the cast is game, the world beautifully realized and the overall story fine. I would't mind seeing more of this, and from the looks of the weapons grade fan-service cameo in the end, I'll have ample opportunities soon.

Solo is not the Star Wars film that I wanted or needed but I was pleasantly surprised and this is a safe return to familiarity. Credit to Alden Ehrenreich who had big shoes to fill and overall I think he is convincing enough to make the Han Solo character his own. Donald Glover is perfectly cast as Lando and Joonas Suotamo gives us a fun and physical Chewbacca. There are notable pacing issues and a lack of ambition. But the set pieces excite, the Falcon steals the show and overall I had fun.

"Solo: A Star Wars Story"(2018), at the very least, it's certainly 'A Star Wars Story'. For the most part it "Star Wars" well enough where it needs to for a "Star Wars" movie. However, I never really needed/wanted this "Star Wars" movie, and although the movie is entertaining enough as a space fantasy/action/adventure movie, it never really does anything to raise it above just being the disposable ca$h-grab popcorn flick it was engineered to be.

2 1/4 hours of me flushing my eyes with artificial vanilla extract. As objectively OK as objectivity will allow. Which in a way, is an unfortunate missed opportunity. The cast (yes, including Alden Ehrenreich) did the best damned job they could, but you simply can't elevate a script this overwhelmingly meh. At least we learned Lando sleeps with anything.

I did enjoy it - and think I would prefer more Star War stories like this one, smaller scale, much less ambitious, with a clear genre focus, just little chapters of the Star Wars universe and its characters. Howard succeeds in making the whole thing coherent and competent. Is it a great movie that deserves mainstream attention? Gosh no, but I'd be crazy to expect that from Star Wars at this point. Comparable to enjoying a Star Wars novel, comic, or game - a nice way to spend a couple of hours.

Competently made, fairly enjoyable but unremarkable. Even more so than The Force Awakens or Rogue One this feels like big budget fan fiction. A Wookieepedia article made for the big screen, designed to satisfy old school Star Wars fans by answering every single question you have about Han Solo. Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos is good, effectively menacing but didn't have enough screen time. Although the weakest entry of the new Star Wars movies it's still watchable but in the end quite forgettable.

Solo is the first of the Disney Star Wars movies that pulls its punches. To avoid the possibility of marring a classic franchise, this film takes no risks whatsoever in its characters or world-building, resulting in a boring viewing experience. The set pieces and action sequences are good enough to be entertaining, but the aesthetic of the film is severely marred by strangely muddy lighting that makes the cinematography dull and uninviting.

Most of this feels like the spin-off it is, but more like a straight-to-DVD animated one that hits the required notes, but never in a memorable way. For example, nothing new's added to Han's relationship w/ Lando; it just recycles what's come before. Comedy would help but the jokes fall flat (esp an activist droid). Luckily, Bettany shows he can make even a 1-dimensional villain compelling & the last 15 minutes finally deliver some real surprises while creating an intriguing setup for sequels.

Plods along a bumpy trek for quite some time, featuring a pairing of characters so utterly coincidental and contrived, it feels like a red herring initially. But just past the half-way mark, the film won me over and keep me mostly in good spirits til its satisfying end, with the Millennium Falcon mid-film sequence being one of the franchise's highlights, showcasing each of the rag-tag characters' skills and contributions whilst offering up the doses of exciting entertainment.

Another sad case where the highest praise I can give is that it's adequate. Bare bones narrative felt as mechanical as the whole premise & didn't pack nearly as much personality as it should. I didn't really expect anything but somehow by the end I still felt let down. Actors were surprisingly likeable but had frustratingly little to work with. Why the hell is every scene filmed in harsh backlight & muted colour palette?! Horrifyingly ugly filtered aesthetic undermined any potential enjoyment.

I really enjoyed the amazing cast and charismatic characters. However, much of the plot relied heavily on a dizzying amount of luck and rebellious confidence. The pace was frenetic with more action than story. There were many clever and engaging moments but also some political correctness and cuteness pandering. The plot at the end breaks down to near chaos. It mostly fits in with the overall story, theme and tone of the franchise. Fun and worth watching a second time.

It ultimately failed to sell the idea that you were actually seeing parts of Han Solo's actual past. The entire film felt a bit like a hallmark version of what Han Solo "might" have looked like with an actor who can barely carry the role. The entire tone of this just didn't feel right. At times it also tread a bit too close to Lucas prequel-ville especially with the corny robot sex jokes and robo socio-political commentary. The action was the saving grace but everything else felt so mediocre.

I'm willing to give this another shot, but I didn't like it as much as the other recent Star Wars films. Maybe the stakes just felt too low, and some of the links to the rest of the series felt a bit shoehorned in. Ehrenreich does a good enough job, but feels more like a young Dennis Quaid than Harrison Ford. Competently made, fun, but a bit unengaging.

Viewed May 26, 2018. The opposite of The Last Jedi - a perfunctory adventure story that hits its marks, satisfying genre requirements while making references to mythology that fans will remember, never reaching for any kind of subtext. It's just setpieces and moments, with a couple too many twists for my liking, and some comic relief that works about half the time. But on the whole I found it rather enjoyable.

It doesn't matter that Ehrenreich doesn't have the swagger in him (he seems like a supporting player in his own story) because nothing matters. The film is lights and sounds, betrayals and narrow escapes, watchable (even magnificent) through its visual design (MVP dp Bradford Young), with capable, robust action. It will probably be remembered as a misfire, if anyone remembers it at all. But seeing it on a rainy day in Cannes felt smooth like velvet.

Well, I've seen every other Star Wars movie, so I figured I may as well see this one. It's perfectly competent entertainment, offering up lots of chases and explosions but very little in the way of actual intrigue or surprises. Emilia Clarke is lovely as ever and Woody Harrelson does his best, but Alden Ehrenreich is a piss poor, pretty boy actor. I guess I just expected the back story of one of the coolest characters in movie history to be WAY cooler. This Solo is a preening goof.

A solid, if unspectacular space adventure with good action (the dangerous short-cut on the Kessel run was a highlight), interesting and likeable characters (many of the charmingly unpredictable "mostly good" variety; others pure comic relief-I loved L3: "Do you want anything?" "Equal rights?"), and an easy-to-follow plan/heist/escape plot with a couple nice twists at the end. Finally, I know this is dependent on seeing the other films, but I smiled big when Chewy climbed in the co-pilot's seat.

Things happen because they're supposed to happen, and not because they would benefit the story. This is well-made but it feels perfunctory, fragmented, and entirely unnecessary. This movie is what happens when you work back from a foregone conclusion that's three decades old. Solo is tired, and it made me feel tired. It should never have been made. P.S. This is the first movie in which I didn't dislike Emilia Clarke! She's improving.

I don't see people giving this movie (especially in conjunction with Rogue One) credit for something: Star Wars is being diversified. Solo is a straight-up buddy heist movie, within the construct of the Star Wars universe. Remember: these "stories" are allowed to be different. I can't say that I was struck with any glaring plot holes (always a concern), but, I also wasn't struck by a sense of "this is GREAT!" This is really entertaining while not being "great". And that's fine for this fan.

Official fanfiction of the worst kind. Hey, wanna know how Chewie got his nickname? Or what that one line about the Falcon’s personality back in Empire meant? Then oh boy is this the movie for you! Filmmaking is functional although suffers from a lack of wides, certainly due to the reshoots. Glover and Waller-Bridge steal the show, while Eldenreich is fine and Clarke is......not a movie star. After the underwhelming Rogue One, the well documented production issues of Solo, not to mention the fact I had no interest in a Han Origin story, this turned out to be far better than expected. Ehrenreich continues to show the charm of his role in Hail Caesar (without matching it) and gives a reasonable impression of a young Harrison Ford with a little less cynicism. This actually provides the basis of one of the best gags in the movie
"I've got a good feeling about this".

Well, this was a big middle finger to George Lucas, because they definitely, 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, made it clear, that Han shot first! I know fanboys are going nuts over L3 being a SJW feminist android, with the sass of an angry fat black woman (with swaying hips, for some odd reason) but she's still less annoying than Jar Jar Binks. Qi'ra sliding into those "DM's" at the end was a pleasant twist (if you catch my drift) Han firing his pistol like Harrison Ford was also a nice touch.

The movie nobody asked for is not as bad as everyone thought, when it was announced. Ehrenreich is a charming Solo, Glover a great Calrissian. Chewbacca is Chewbacca. The movie does some nice things with its heist plot but never becomes really great. It’s kind of a lumpy and longwinded movie and I started to feel its runtime by the end, and I will NEVER think of Alden Ehrenreich when someone says “Han Solo.” But I did have some fun with its “pirate movie in space” vibe and steering a different way than the usual Skywalkers and Jedi, and the train heist sequence early on was just some good fun well-designed/choreographed Hollywood action; maybe my favorite action scene of Disney Star Wars’ four movies so far.

So, they made a film about a single line in A New Hope. If you are going to put out a Star Wars film every year then you really ought to try to do something different. There is a stilted script, often tacky, following a simple but effective plotline; a solitary plucky female and a bloodless villain; and a charismatic protagonist whose straightforward adventures and broadcast Goodness in a world of classic puppets, no-consequence ragamuffinism, and Friendship makes one excited to see the next installment.

Maybe there's some Star Wars fatigue to do with it, but generally, I still did have a good time. Ehrenreich wasn't the best choice for a young Han, and Emelia Clarke's character is a little rough, but the rest of the cast, especially Glover, are all noteworthy. Not the best Star Wars film, but it's a fun, enjoyable yarn with plenty of action and good characters old and new: Alden as Han is no Harrison but those are impossible shoes to fill and he did a fair job; the other mains (and secondarys) were very on the mark. There were plenty of twists and turns... including at least one doozy and a large number of slick set pieces and it explains why performing the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs, a unit of distance, not time, makes sense and is an accomplishment!

A peculiar mixed bag. Really delightful in some ways (Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s L3-37, the outstanding John Powell score, and a really great half-hour stretch that starts around an hour in) and positively eye-rolling in others (too many answers to unasked questions, predictable heist cliches in the third act, and one groan-worthy cameo near the end). There were a lot of good comedy moments and fun bits, and I know Alden Ehrenreich isn't a very skilled actor at this point, but I really connected to the energy he was putting out. That said, I can also see the flaws; this story came *so close* to a coherent, meaningful theme, but turned away hard at multiple points. Another poor stand-alone Star Wars film. It has all the problems that I might expect considering the director was fired and replaced by a studio yes-man at the last second. The effects are great and it has more energy and character than Rogue One but that doesn't mean it's good; the plot is largely a mess, the characters, while casted fairly well, fall flat, the references are too much and too intrusive, and the cinematography is atrocious: this film looks like it was lit by an amateur.

You know... it worked. As many issues they had while filming this, it turned out alright. I wish they hadn't included quite so many "backstory" moments for Han. Could have done a passable job if perhaps they stretched the time frame of the film out to include several years of his life. Great casting, some great action sequences, and it did feel like a Western. I would rank this squarely above half of the "main" franchise films (prequels and episode VIII, at least).

The first few scenes give the impression that this will be just awful, but it eventually settles into a kind of awkward rhythm. Its spirit is perhaps closer to the original STAR WARS than to any of the interminable sequels in this worst of all "franchises". The way critics and fans decide, as a herd, which entries of a series are to be praised and which derided has almost nothing to do with the virtues and sins of the movies themselves. Here, the worst of the latter is that it is just too long.

Solo is a dangerous low point for the franchise. The changing directors, reshoots, and dull color palette really kill any good will it may have won from the train heist scene. Alden Ehrenreich does as much as he can to make the lead role interesting, all that's really sure is that he is not Harrison Ford. It's... fine. The interesting characters get wasted and the space western heist plot isn't terribly compelling, but it's worth a watch. (That scene explaining where Han got his name is really painful though, fair warning) Ehrenreich and Glover are fantastic.

It's fine. I had no expectations going in, which helped. I'm totally up for Donald Glover in a Lando Calrissian movie.

Actually pretty decent. I expected less and got more... Ehrenreich who? Both he, Glover and Harrelson, all did a great job. *Good

There is a couple moments you can tell it's Lord and Miller but it's been pretty scrubbed clean by Howard. I don't really get the complaints about the guy playing Han, he did fine. He's just not Harrison Ford. This is a fun little heist film that did drag a bit in parts, but what Marvel/Star Wars film doesn't these days. Also, HANS DICE.

Better than I was anticipating, and more successful than Rogue One for sure. It works well just as a fun little adventure, not having any major issues when it comes to the characters, story or action. It does have some pointless origin story stuff and callbacks, and the photography is annoyingly dark and cloudy for no particular reason, but not bad at all.

Entertaining flick that I enjoyed. The cast is good, much better than I anticipated. The story is okay. I didn't like how every single element of Han's backstory that was left open in the OT is covered here. It felt like they were ticking off a checklist. It suffers from being a prequel and everybody knowing the outcome of pretty much every event. Nevertheless, a good effort, better than Rogue One and for what it is I enjoyed it more than TLJ. Still, it could have been a more interesting film.

I'm not too fond of the revision to Han's backstory - what the EU provided in this regard was much more substantial and interesting than what this film provides. This films Han was also boring - lacking the rudeness, dry wit, and cockiness that defined Harrison's performance in the 70's.Although the film's plot was bland and uninteresting, there were some exciting and fun scenes despite their contrived nature. The performances outside of Solo's character were decent too, despite the bland dialog

The Kasdans seek coincidence and happenstance to explain away mystique-elements of the franchise's lore. The winking and hamming are distracting. Lucas is a maximalist who thought he was a minimalist, and that misunderstanding built an interesting universe. This hastily assembled group are seasoned professionals telling a dispassionate story. Studios aren't going to take chances with a $300M budget. So, we get lackluster movies. Better than VII, and much better than VIII.

A fairly uninteresting backstory no one really wanted to see, told in a ham-fisted way. It was better than I expected, but still a completely forgettable production and the worst product of the Star Wars revival thus far.

Amateur hour. My main problem is that it rarely feels like a genuine Star Wars movie. Blame it on the wooden actors (save Woody Harrelson), the lazy script or the uninspired action.

Completely fine. And fun. It's not trying to be anything more than a goofy serial, which is really what this series is anyway.

it takes a a minute or two (or twenty), but when solo starts to get good, it gets good. harrelson and glover, the latter's performance nearly indistinguishable from williams' portrayal, lead the admittedly kinda boring group of rogues, and honestly, i had a good time. it's a small, confined story. feels just like ron howard often. lot of good parts, this just needed some fine tuning!

Ehrenreich is not a convincing Han Solo, but otherwise Solo is a reasonably enjoyable entry to the Star Wars franchise

This is a movie nobody asked for ended up being my favorite of the Disney-era Star Wars movies (thus far). It felt like a Star Wars movie. Ehrenreich was surprisingly great as a young Han, and Donal Glover WAS Lando. I wish there were more of him, but isn't that what sequels are for?

I was sour on this one for what Lucasfilm did to Lord and Miller, but I know Howard is a competent filmmaker and he delivered with the best of his abilities here. Everything here is new for a Star Wars film and that's what has me most excited about it. The action setpieces are really rousing and nicely crafted and the cast is all tops; I found Ehrenreich's take on Han nailed the spirit of the character but remained his own spin. Glover is also spot on. This is better than it has any right to be.

Blandly entertaining saga feels like a misguided response to the unfortunate fan backlash from the edgier THE LAST JEDI; while inevitably hampered by the lack of suspense which comes from a reverse-engineered story, Howard's competent but journeyman direction can't bring enough life to the moments between the action set-pieces, leading to a soporific feel at times. Thankfully the action scenes are uniformly exciting and, faced with an impossible task, Ehrenreich manages to be a fine Solo.

Man! People love to bitch. I enjoyed this movie a lot. I watched it on Netflix and, once I was finished, I immediately wanted to watch it again. Alden Ehrenreich does a fair job of playing Han Solo. There were moments where I felt like someone else could have done a better job but there were also some great moments as well. Donald Glover was fantastic. I could watch a solo movie with him as Calrissian. I have no idea whey Jon Favreau was chosen to voice the alien. Everything else was a treat.

It's a good movie, I just have a hard time seeing Ehrenreich as Han Solo so there's a struggle at suspending belief sometimes. Honestly, I think a problem with some of the casting in new Star Wars movies is that there are so many big names. It makes it more obvious that we're watching people performing in a Star Wars movie, rather than buying into an experience inside the Star Wars universe.

Different than every other Star Wars in a really good way. The Star Wars movie can get a bit repetitive and overdone, and I felt like this was a nice standalone for the franchise. Ehrenreich was a very believable and fun-to-watch Han, and really enjoyed all of the newer side characters. All in all, this a pretty underrated Star Wars movie that I think just about anyone can enjoy. I give 8 pew pews out of 10.

It's a fun side story. It has an engaging plot with enjoyable action sequences and not easily predicted twists. Most of the actors bring their A-game as well, with Glover and Clarke being standouts. However, as enjoyable as it is, the plot is very superficial and few of the emotional scenes land. The writers also largely fail at developing Han's character from the optimistic hero seen here to the cynical outlaw on display in the originals. Still, it's significantly better than Rogue One.

I think new Star Wars movies didn't add anything yet they're enjoyable. Except for Rogue One ofcourse. But I'm very disappointed with this movie. Casting is the best thing about this film. I'm sorry but I didn't feel any Star Wars spirit in Solo. It made me happy to see those old referances though. But being unable to celebrate my 1500th movie here with a "perfect" movie made me even sadder.

As a stand-alone Star Wars story and a heist-movie-light it's a good ride and very likeable. The interfering fingers of Disney execs seem to grasp into every aspect 'Solo', which mostly made me wonder how we got a film a fine as 'Rogue One' when Disney want to play as safe as Ron Howard. The screenplay is very flat and it's a film of thematic and conceptual near misses, muddled with too many non-creative influences. Good fun, but the remnants of what could have been are all over this film.

It's not a BAD film, but very safe and unnecessary. Where was the edge of Han Solo from A New Hope? There were some good scenes but mostly routinely edited CGI bullshit. I thought that actors were OK, even Ehrenreich, but no one really shined -- and Bettany's villain and Clarke's femme fatale should have been stronger. First SW film with run of the mill feel for me. Not that it was any worse than e.g Phantom Menace which benefited from years of anticipation, but it probably says something.

Is it the best Star Wars film? No. Is it the worst Star Wars film? Certainly not. Solo: A Star Wars Story had its good parts & bad (mostly around Donald Glover & his robot). But overall it delivers an average performance and is better then the last two which isn't saying much.
