The question is not HOW you make a hybrid sci-fi thriller that blends 2001: A space Odyssey and Mad Max, but WHY? Starring Charlton Heston as a crazy guy who goes to the desert, Jack Palance as a crazy guy already in the desert, Corin Nemec as the poster boy for spray-on suntan, Tim Matheson as the universe's worst captain, and Peter Boyle as the corporate bigwig who takes suntan boy to the beach in his private jet to tell him his whole plan before having the lad killed by a Chippendales dancer.

I don't think this one deserves the bashing it gets. Think of it as a sci-fi TV movie, and you'll probably be entertained enough.
