Sogobi

Viewed February 9, 2022. There’s a shot in this film that encapsulates what I like about Benning’s slow, desolate landscape films. Sogobi starts with 15-20 minutes of unspoiled nature, shots of rivers and valleys and forests—no motion except for the natural flow of the water, no sound except birds and rustling branches. This idyllic atmosphere is punctured by the appearance of a chopper, flying up in the top of the frame while it drags a barrel into the river below.
