Set in early 20th century Indiana (in 1903), So Dear to My Heart tells the tale of Jeremiah Kincaid (Bobby Driscoll) and his quest to raise his 'champion' lamb, Danny (named for the famed race horse, Dan Patch, who is also portrayed in the film). Jeremiah's dream of showing Danny at the Pike County Fair must overcome the obstinate objections of his loving, yet strict, grandmother Granny (Beulah Bondi). Jeremiah's confidant, Uncle Hiram (Burl Ives), is the boy's steady ally. (wikipedia.org)

Walt's most biographical film is so full of nostalgia, sentimentality, sincerity, Christian lessons, and trains that it was probably outdated even on its release in '48. However, the 14 minutes of animated sequences are beautiful and definitely ahead of their time. The score is lovely as well. Burl Ives's simple yet wise, semi-retarded, handyman man-child probably comes off as creepy among today's audiences.

Disney with a live-action and animation hybrid. Mostly live-action, with Burl Ives responsible for the vibe with his folk songs. Felt like it should have been more touching, but it was still a fine enough family movie. What's sad however, is that it was the last Harry Carey movie to be released, as he'd passed away the previous year. He'd been one of the grand old figures in westerns for decades already, having entered movies in 1910. Having seen over 80 of his films, he was a favorite.

It's not terrible by any means, but it's forgettable and unremarkable.
