Not much in the head but plenty beneath the hood, Smokey and the Bandit is infectious fun with plenty of car wrecks to keep your eyes glued.

Along with Star Wars, the uber success of Smokey was surely an omen for things to come. It is an ordinary film with no artistic merit or intelligence whatsoever, and it is only watchable due to Reynolds' devil-may-care persona and a few enjoyable, if unremarkable, car chases which are not among Needham's best work in the genre. Its real relevance now is as an artifact of a bygone era when Hollywood made films primarily for the domestic market. In this case, for Betty and Cleatus.

I have a theory that Burt Reynolds never actually acted in his heyday; he just aloofly wandered on set as Hal Needham recorded him and then gave everyone else dialog to form the plot. Anyway, nobody directed car chases like the late, great Hal Needham, and this film shows his talents at their keenest. The elevation of a scofflaw to folk hero status feels wonderfully reminiscent of Vanishing Point. Most of all, Jerry Reed's soundtrack serves as the X-Factor that REALLY makes this film.

Not sure how this became one of the more iconic car-chase movies, but it isn't bad. The stunt driving is fun, even if it doesn't hold a candle to better chases. The humor is horrible, but at least it doesn't take itself seriously.

Yeah, it's dumb as dirt, but it's also entertaining as all hell and has some of the best car stunts on film. Reynolds rode the wave of charisma he earned in this film for almost 20 years.

Dopey fun, yes. But pretty well made dopey fun, with some quality car chases and a scenery-devouring Jackie Gleason. My second favorite wildly over the top comedic performance ever (Ted Knight in "Caddyshack" is still where it's at).

A joyride with all the makings of a cult classic. It doesn't aspire to be anything more than just a fun time, but it's a lot of fun.

Lowbrow crowdpleaser that's getting to feel pretty quaint but Jackie Gleason is hilarious and the notion of trucking as a society in itself is appealing.

The iconic action-comedy about an enterprising trucker, his comrade-in-arms, 400 cases of Coors, a runaway bride, a hot-tempered sheriff, his idiot son, and a whole mess of cars, mayhem, and CB lingo. Oh, and a theme song ("Eastbound and Down") that's played so often it'll bore its way right into your skull. It's often fun, but just as often something of a mess; a firmer hand behind the camera (or the script, for that matter) might've made something even greater out of it.

"EASTbOuND AnD dOwn lOadED uP anD TrUCkin'..." When did AMERIKA stop meanin' Coors, gettin' rich smugglin', hitchhikin', hangin' with the boys and a dog, gettin' ass, cigarettes, fast cars, and shittin' on dumbass cops? All on the Fourth of jUlY. Ronald REAGAN was a goddamn COMMUNIST! Six minutes in and they give you the plot and it's barely 90 minutes. Just enough time for a bathroom beer.

Verrrrrry laid back dry run for CANNONBALL RUN is hampered by a curious lack of pacing, rhythm and even mild intensity which renders most of the much-ballyhooed car stunt-work sleepy and numbing, and leaves the cast to mug desperately to try to liven things up; Field tries her best, but can't counteract a willfully disengaged (and disinterested) Reynolds; best (and most genuinely funny) moments belong to Gleason; he's a greasy caricature but he seems to be having the most fun.

Hot damn, I had fun with this movie: The simple and silly premise that combines all the best of both car chase and road trip tropes, the hilarious characters (see Gleason's raging sheriff and his timid son), the CB radio jargon and witty banter, the wild third act with everyone and their grandma (literally) helping Bandit and co. escape from the "smokeys". Gets a little misogynist at points (see the gratuitous butt shots/comments), but fortunately, Field's quirky Carrie holds her own.

I admit that I wanted more out of this. It has all the car-chases you could want and all of it is filmed very well. The problem is that it is without any kind of intelligence, it certainly doesn't pretend to be smart but I can only take so much in the way of general stupidity before I go from genuine enjoyment to slightly annoyed. It ends up being a decent if unspectacular film.

When watching this movie now, it's hard to believe how immensely popular Smokey and the Bandit was in the 70's. However, this film does still have its charm, and it's all built around Bert Reynolds' swagger and Jerry Reed's music.

While it may be very light on plot, have some real roughly edited action beats, and contain a crazy amount of silly banter, Smokey and the Bandit is a good time. Reynolds and Field have great chemistry in spite of not really having much to say to each other. And to think it was all for Coors.

Tapping into the same love of outlaws, adolescent crassness & power fantasies that the Fast&Furious movies would ride later, no 1 ever said this was popular for its writing (the term "lowbrow" fits like Cinderella's slipper) or performances (although to be fair the likeable actors seem to be having a nice enough time on the audience's dime), but even the car chases barely hold up now: there's a tameness 2 them & 1 too many police cars clumsily crashing into things for no visibly clear reason.

Do you see this, 1990's onward? This is how to make a stupid film fun. You put a Trans-am and Burt Reynolds in it! (Warning: this may not work for all films. Although it couldn't have hurt for the Matrix sequels)

The most fun to be had in this movie is the colorful banter between its whimsical cast of characters and the fun slapstick they play with car chases. There's no real meat to anything it does beyond that being the embodiment of southern America's personality and cultural vibes so it probably doesn't land for a lot of people for that reason. But hell, I don't think it reaches for any high and I'm content with a film that just wants to embrace its personality and have fun with it.

I liked this way more than I thought I would. It's not a substantial movie by any means, but it's made with such infectious joy that I found it very difficult not to thoroughly enjoy. With about 20 minutes to go it starts feeling a bit repetitive, but the good will it has built up to that point sustains it to the end. All of the actors seem to be having a great time, and Gleason in particular is chewing ALL of the scenery as the bumbling Sheriff. Just fun.

Amerikan usulü Organize İşler. Teksas'tan bira kaçakçılığı yapan 1 tır şoförü ve arkadaşı, yolda gelinlik giyen bir kız görür. Yol macerası olarak keyifli 1 komedi. Burt Reynolds ve Sally Field iyi ikili olmuşlar. Filmin sonucu olarak ABD halkı, kanunlardaki baskının intikamını polislerden çıkarmış. Geçmişte de gelecekte de polisleri sevmiyorlar. Filmin sonunda, haydutumuz kızı, polislerden kaçırıyor. Sanırım altıma kaçırdım. Sıçmadığına dua et

Breaker breaker 3-9, this is newtothelyte. I'm looking for a competent editor, I've just been through 96 minutes of shit and was wondering if anyone could help me out....... If I never saw this movie again I would be okay with that. It's thin on plot, comedic timing, and competent editing. I didn't go into this expecting to be blown away, but I also wasnt expecting to dislike it as much as I did. The absurd network of CB radio criminals really put me off.
