Kate and Charlie like to have a good time. Their marriage thrives on a shared fondness for music, laughter... and getting smashed. When Kate's partying spirals into hard-core asocial behavior, compromising her job as an elementary schoolteacher, something's got to give. But change isn't exactly a cakewalk. Sobriety means she will have to confront the lies she's been spinning at work and her troubling relationship with her mother. (mubi.com)

This movie's strong point was its acting, and the acting was phenomenal.

A hopeful and lighthearted'ish story about an alcoholic's struggles; well written and supported, but most of all it's Mary.EW's performance that shines; this is the film where she went from being "just" eyecandy to an actress, and that's what elevates this to something well worth watching. *Preview*: #14#, liked, Mary.EW/7b4, rewatch(2) }*{ #13#, story, reviews, cast.

Great acting make up for some written parts that didn't feel natural or realistic. Still a well-made drama.

Interesting story about an alcoholic school teacher. After a few times waking up on the street she decides to get cleaned up, and joins AA. Her alcoholic husband does not follow her, and they soon begin to drift apart. A good story and very well acted. Worth watching but a sometimes difficult subject.

Winstead gives an amazing performance in a well-made but hard-to-watch chronicle of addiction.

It plays as if it is an advertisement for AA, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The movie is probably important for people that are slightly beyond college age and aren't ready for the party to stop, it handles that attitude quite effectively. Ultimately a little melodramatic in the final few scenes, and it does have some wasted moments - but worthy acting by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Nick Offerman in particular.

Even it has a really basic story, telling is very good. The balance between the comedy and the drama is perfectly set. Aaron Paul is the same; alcoholic or junky, nothing special but M.E. Winstead though... I hope one day she will get a serious role. I feel like she's wasting her time and talent.

This is a correct film, but a bit plain, I don't think I will remember it for long. The acting is quite good but the story falls short in my opinion.

This is a well made independent drama. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is great in this film. The script is simple but it works. Overall I would recommend this film.

I guess I have no basis for comparison, but I thought it was very well done.

I didn't expect a study of alcoholism to be such a warm and fuzzy picture. They almost made light of it by cutting out nearly all of the potential depressing, ugly, or painful scenes. Not that I'm complaining - the movie was almost certainly more enjoyable for it. The acting was great from Winstead & Paul. A lot of upbeat folky-indie music made it seem like drinking to excess is pretty cool and fun, and the negative consequences can be fixed by a quick cutaway and "12 months later" caption.

This movie teaches us important life lessons, such as not saying you want to fuck someones moist pussy to their face. The more you know.

Mistakenly I thought it would have comedy in it. On the plus side it was very short.

Some really great work here. A relatively simple story, but told with such heart and unwavering dedication to the truth is what sets it apart.

I liked Smashed. I think it is important. It is confident about its subject matter and it doesn't attempt to condemn the types of people it portrays; it simply watches them and makes its point by simple observance. The handheld cinematography strongly portrays Kate's state of mind. Some scenes will resonate strongly with viewers who have dealt with alcoholics in their own lives. It's a shame that the film rarely finds a proper tone, and that it seemed to run out of money part way through.

Utterly compelling character study, anchored by outstanding performances from everyone involved. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's a welcome take on a compelling genre, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul make for one heck of a screen couple. Smashed, and the characters that inhabit it, feels intense and real.

Winstead gives a committed albeit occasionally overcompensating performance in an otherwise unsubtle and slightly preachy film about alcoholism.

Great acting but a few semi big misses ruin it a little. Possibly down to being a bit short in run time so bits and bobs get glossed over. Another writing pass could have sorted that, but as it stands it's a good indie.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead gives the best performance of the year. It's such a shame she didn't get any recognition. I wish they had just pushed the movie to 2013 for wide release.

Scary-good acting from the leads, lovably awkward but natural script. Yes.
