Another instance of a pre-code portrayal of race more complex than what would soon be standard. Nick's employee Snake Eyes is permitted to gamble on more or less equal terms with the whites, with his later shabby treatment used to show both that money has made Nick a dick, and that class is the ultimate divider. (Snake Eyes himself is still little more than a stereotype.) Robinson's fun as always. Cagney has a great pantomime bit showcasing the singular grace and energy about to make him a star.

DVDRip no MakingOff.

Decent movie with Edward G. Robinson doing his thing. Boris Karloff was in this but didn't do much as was the case with James Cagney who was criminally underused.

Normally, one asks, "What's this movie about?" before seeing it... not 45 minutes into it. And why the heck was James Cagney's character the weak sidekick? I file this next to "Brother Orchid" in the "Why are these considered gangster movies?!" file.

Playful drama featuring two Hollywood Greats, badly marred by its very ending scene.

Enjoyable rise-and-fall romp that hinges on the sheer likeability of Edward G. Robinson. Luckily that goes a long way, even if this mimics a number of other pictures from the era. Noel Francis is great as a nasty number, and Cagney, who's only in a few scenes, has a couple of great moments with Robinson.

The two great gangsters of Hollywood, Edward G. Robinson & James Cagney, team up! The only film they did together. This is really a Robinson vehicle. He is a small town gambler wanting to be a big city gambler and Cagney is his pal. It's like 80% Robinson and 20% Cagney. Cagney still had time to slap a bitch in the face! This is nothing amazing, but it's a full on entertaining gambler movie as expected with such excellent actors up front and enough blonds to please any blond crazy person!

Edward G. Robinson is great in the lead role in this film. This is a well made movie, the cast gels well together and the story is really entertaining. The only thing I would have liked more of is more scenes with James Cagney. Definitely check out this classic film.

Like other early 1930's crime filcks, Smart Money is presented as a rise-and-fall morality tale, but works as the comedic tragedy of an amiable anti-hero, here played by the distinctive Edward G. Robinson. As with most cinema of its era, from the moment the female character enters and onwards, it is encumbered by her sexist portrayal and a general lack of integrity regarding gender relations. A typical product of its times, with a poor ending, but I enjoyed most of it.

Wouldn't have been much without Edward G. Robinson, but his performance is good enough to make up for all its shortcomings.

"Bros before hoes" is the timeless moral of this lightweight film staring both greatest Warner gangsters - Robinson and Cagney. Entertaining, but not very ambitious or interesting, this film looks like it spent too much time on cutting table. Apart from nice cast and pretty dames, there aren't many reasons to see it.
