The classic story of "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" is brought to life by the gothic film maker Tim Burton. Johnny Depp plays Ichabod Crane, and to win the heart of Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci) he will have to brave the nearby woods, even though several decapitated bodies have been found. And then the legend of the axe wielding headless horsemen come together to make this movie. (imdb)

Decently fun (though not remotely scary) remix of the original story with some great visuals pulled from the silent cinema days. The story is rather muddled (they save most of the exposition for an eye-rolling villain monologue at the end), but the cast know what movie they're in and appropriately swing for the fences.

Sleepy Hallow undoubtedly has excellent art direction full of creepy grotesque buildings, characters and landscapes. It has a slightly humourous tone which prevents it from being a "edge of your seat" thiller/horror, which I find makes it even more enjoyable. Depp is superb as the brave, but cowardly, Ichabod Crane and Walken as the Headless Horseman was a really nice touch. I have to say, though, Christina Ricci's blond-dyed eyebrows looked bloody weird.

I remember seeing the trailer and being less than convinced that I would enjoy this movie. It was a surreal feeling. On one hand you had this dated horror story, which stopped scaring kids before the industrial age. On the other you had Tim Burton, who at that point in time could do no wrong, with his wondrous and eerie visual style. I suppose he did alright, and 'Sleepy Hollow' wasn't exactly bad, which can be said about most of his subsequent offerings. But it just wasn't the same after that.

Very satisfying gothic mood piece (not really a horror film as it has been billed). Depp is great fun as Ichabod Crane, perfecting the oddball eccentric persona which would define him in the 00's. Ricci is also fine in an unusally "normal" characterisation, but occasionally seems ill-at-ease in the period setting. Dependable supporting cast of old British pros are in great form, and Burton succesfully evokes the mood and feel of the Hammer horror pictures.

Probably the tipping point of Burton falling into his own recycled material, but it's still entertaining enough to be watchable. Apart from Walken stealing the show with no lines it's notable how many Brit heavyweights are littered around in bit parts.

Walken's casting is a stroke of genius, but beyond that there's very little magic to this adaptation of the classic tale. The set design and art direction are luscious and incredible (the film did win an Oscar, lest we forget), but the story never comes to life the way the sets do -- storytelling never was Burton's strong suit. Depp gives the type of performance we've come to expect from him in a Burton picture. He's always good, it's just starting to feel...pedestrian. So does this movie.

A haunting, brooding, grotesque and twisted blood-stained love tale with a couple decapitated bodies thrown in. The acting defines this, with Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci as always turning in fantastic performances. Other than that, a little bit too average of a retelling of the classic headless horsemen.

It does a few things right - the movie is pervaded by a deep, rich, creepy atmosphere, and the mythos of Sleepy Hollow is one of my favorites. Still, the movie just doesn't seem to go anywhere. Johnny Depp gives an oddly average performance, devoid of character, and the plot just seems to meander from point to point without much meaning. Plus, the comic relief is extremely inconsistent with the violent, dark tone. Tim Burton should have figured out what he was doing with this one.

I think Tim Burton only read the title of the story, because this certainly is snoozy and empty. Christina Ricci gives a very wooden, dead-eyed, low-rent child actor performance. Depp emulates Jeffrey Combs a bit, which makes me want to recast this whole motha. The horseman is an especially silly/distracting choice. The set is neato. Wish Tim Burton made A Christmas Carol instead.

This probably won't come as a surprise, but the best part of Sleepy Hollow is Johnny Depp's acting. For a period piece, it was fairly easy to watch. If the run time was shortened and film was made to be a bit scarier, it would have been a decent movie.

The last version of this film i watched was animated and somewhat disappointing. This version stars Johnny Depp and delivers a solid plot and lots of action. There are a number of gruesome scenes featuring the recent victims of the horseman but i found that added to the plot nicely. It keeps you wondering why the horseman is taking the heads from his kills and is there a reason for killing the persons he does? I wont spoil it.

Tim Burton crafts a moody and atmospheric world of gothic horror that is chilling and otherworldly. The film's visuals are the best part of the movie, as Burton displays macabre scenes of gory bloodshed in this darker take on the popular Ichabod Crane story. Still, despite its visual flair, I found the film a little flat at times, and when you peel back the layers of its horrific storyline, the characters themselves are wooden and lacking.

Sleepy Hollow is a baffling work from Tim Burton. The visual aside which are obviously great. The plot is a needlessly complicated web. The mystery side of this intrigues but also distracts. And the horror aspects, while honoring the Hammer horror films of the 70s, are a little too reliant on atmosphere and not enough actual event scares.

The epitome of mediocrity. There's nothing to love or hate about this movie, which in my eyes is somehow worse than something that is aggressively bad but gives you something to muse about. I was shocked to learn the movie is only loosely based on the subject material, seeing how bland and passionless it is. A far cry from Tim Burton's earlier, more inventive works.

We expected, with this film, to see a highly stylised, very vivid and visually stunning piece, and we got it. It's beautiful to look at, but then, it's a Burton movie. Johnny Depp and company do well with what they're given, and what they're given isn't bad. What I would say the film suffers from, though, is the lack of a convincing emotional core and a denouement that feels a little tacked-on.

Not the greatest Tim Burton film of all time, but I hardly suspect it's the worst. It's a little cheesy in places and Johnny Depp plays a marvelous Johnny Depp. However, the narrative is what is to be proud of in this film. Once Burton grabs your attention, he never lets go. The execution could have been better, but Burton once again proves his masterful storytelling power here.

It's difficult to imagine any other popular director of the time who could command such a budget for an old tale and do it better than Tim Burton. Sleepy Hollow doesn't fully transfer the power of the original story, but the soul is there. Depp's timid and conflicting character holds the narrative together as plot and relationship development is blown past. There's many tone-breaking sight gags and some cartoonish CG, but the movie remains uniquely fun and Gothic, if not focused in its power.

(Viewed on 10/10/13): It's neither as good as Irving's classic or the old Disney cartoon, but Sleepy Hollow is a stylish, elaborately produced gothic horror that marked the end of Burton's solid 14 year run. Shot entirely on magnificent sound stages, S.H is like an expensive Hammer film with its dank interiors, misty landscapes and its chilly autumnal mood. It's style over substance, but it's an evocative world that's brilliantly realized, even if Walker's screenplay is a bit routine.

Set in 1799, "Sleepy Hollow" is based on Washington Irving's classic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." I've always thought Walken was an odd choice for the villain, but he manages it well.
Quite an excellent cast, and a joy to see most are veteran British actors. Weirdly with everyone having or putting on English accents (even Ricci giving a valiant, if flawed, effort) Miranda Richardson confusingly seems to affect an American twang for seemingly no reason.
