I could have sworn more than twelve bullets were shot at the end...which I suppose is not the point, but still.

Very dark, well-acted, interesting film debut. Need to see one of McDonagh's plays I think.

Nice debut from McDonagh. Really excited to see what else this guy does in the future.

The young psychopath in this movie is kind of how I imagine McDonagh himself. That stone-cold, self-amused cynicism. McDonagh seems enchanted with the character, posing him as a transformative makeshift mentor for the protagonist, and I feel like he kind of tries to embody that role for his audience in his feature films.

Martin McDonagh's debut short already bears some of the trademarks as well as the high quality that would go on to grace his later, more famous work. The restricted setting and the very good cast (especially Brendan Gleeson and Rúaidhrí Conroy) are captivating, and the writing successfully walks the line between funny, sad, upsetting, ridiculous and ironic. In the final scene, McDonagh toys with our expectations for the outcome as we eagerly watch in anticipation: a mark of a job well done.

Reasonable short set in Ireland. Seemingly about loss, grief and social etiquette initially, but McDonagh foreshadows his feature career by including a violent twist and a shot of black comedy. No real mistakes to find, but the story doesn't have much of a morale or resolution like great shorts often should. Not a bad calling card for those involved.

It doesn't reach the heights that In Bruges did, but this is a Martin McDonagh for Dummies because it showcases all the tactics he would employ a few years later. Dark but comedic, and some of the plot is obvious like who the obnoxious young guy is and what role he plays. However, the ending was unexpected. It was both sad and humorous. Also, Gleeson with either of the McDonagh brothers is money.

The plot might be obvious from the start, but it is a good watch nonetheless. A short movie that showcases the dark comedy approach that Martin McDonagh would later use for the movie In Bruges, which I absolutely loved.

Can this really be called a comedy. I did not laugh. The kid in this is a cruel psychopath. The old man is sad and depressed. The woman on the train was a tragic mess and her husband wound up as well. Where would there be a train with all the people who have just lost a loved one? This has nothing much to say except that people can get really messed up.

Typically macabre and savory stuff from McDonagh. The guy is one of the best when it comes to mixing comedy, tragedy and allegory. The cow scene was probably the highlight.

Didn't expect where this was going. Not as good as McDonagh's features but worth seeing if you liked them.

Breathtakingly irreverent black comedy getting laughs out of the darkest material: "Is that your dead kid? He looks like your man off Bronski Beat. No wonder you banged it on something." "He was a cot death." Hilarious.

An ace short and a great prelude/companion piece to McDonagh and Gleeson's feature length collaboration In Bruges.

Somewhat chrming little film. Script is very well written. McDonagh has very good chances to be the king of dark comedy.
