Sinister has such a promising start -- the first scene, a murder shot in Super 8, is freaking awesome --, but slowly the psycho triller investigation is taken by your average supernatural story full-of-pale-kids and lazy scares, ended with a last-minute surprise and the face of the devil on screen. The found footage premise, used in chilly scenes at the start, is also removed for a more conventional storytelling. Too bad.

Lots to like here if you can swallow the premise (I could) and elements of its execution. It feels well made, and the score choices were top notch. It had some genuinely creepy moments, and Hawke brought a lot of credibility. It lost impact for me resorting to LOUDLY ANNOUNCED JUMP SCARES, and I think the role of the 'orrible kids could have been handled more effectively. For me, it might have worked better if some bravery was employed in dialling it back a bit, but this is still very decent.

The only thing sinister about it is how menacing it is. Uh. The home movies play out exactly like watching someone's home movies. But they're shot in a found footage format. But it's like watching a movie. But it's found footage. But it's a movie. Found footage. Movie. Found footage movie. Found footage movie is like a movie. Watching a found footage movie is like watching a movie. "Who's holding the camera in the home movies," we think. "Who's holding the camera on Ethan Hawke," we don't think.

From the first moments you can already imagine how this movie would most likely play out, and Sinister obediently follows the genre standards to a T. Damnit, there was so much potential for effective creepiness, but instead we get jumpscares and bland ghostly children. Soundtrack was pretty damn awesome though.

The atmosphere is dark and moody, and the thrills are anything but cheap. The final scene, however, is completely useless, as it only serves to spell out everything in big, capital, finger-painted letters for viewers with little to no imagination. I would still recommend this to fans of smart horror, and people who seek further confirmation that children are evil.

Nothing is more terrifying for me than YouTube snuff films (first half of the film is great). Nothing is more boring than watching Ethan Hawke watch them (second half of the film is not). If anything it suffers from what I call "The X-Files Syndrome": why doesn't someone turn on some goddamn lights?

Watchable simply because it's Ethan Hawke in horror which makes it interesting in itself. The 8mm film shots are genuinely creepy and it's too bad the overall premise is bad. The "less is more" mantra with horror is ignored of course. It's decent until the half-way mark when we get CGI ghost children and a evil babylonian diety who looks like a pro-wrestler. Plot heads south shortly thereafter. Not sure why D'Onofrio was wasted in this either. Juliet Rylance is miscast and very annoying.

Somewhat effective horror composed of four derivative elements: a writer whose obsession runs dangerously out of control; the discovery of disturbing and uncanny film footage; sinister kids; and supernatural entities. Unfortunately, it gradually dawns on the viewer that the filmmakers have failed to connect these elements into a coherent narrative capable of redeeming the unoriginality, with the disappointing and frustrating result that the scariness diminishes as the intended climax approaches.

This Scott Derrickson has pretty good taste in music, with Ulver, Sunn O)))/Boris, and Boards of Canada all making appearances. On top of that, the story he's adapting is strong and something I find really interesting. Shame that everything else about this film is fundamentally trite.

Sinister fills its run time with great atmospheric execution, and some very solid thrills, however it comes up a little flat. While I very much liked the movie, you can see that Sinister could have been more... by being less. Taking out some of the tacky supernatural stuff, there could have been a great crime/horror film in here, but the deity stuff feels shoehorned to make another ghost flick. In the end, very good, but pretty disappointing.

One of the better horror movies I can remember seeing in recent memory, but still an ultimately disappointing one. The first scene is absolutely awesome, and all the home videos are more well-made and scary than any Paranormal Activity movie. The music used throughout is also very cool and eerie. However, the second half of the movie gets too bogged down in stupid jump scares, silly ghost children and obnoxious camera effects. The ending is also extremely predictable, unfortunately so.

Everything about this film is just completely on the nose; as I watched it I could feel the writers thinking about how SUPER CREEPY each shot and sequence would be. This is a movie that writes itself. Throw in enough glassy eyed children, moving photographs, and startling "creepy man in the background" reveals and you've got yourself a winner, right? Wrong.

Though I get sick of the premise (people move into house, get haunted), I felt like Sinister handled it well. It built a good story about a true-crime novelist, and it even raised questions about the idea of whether he's doing it for fame or to battle injustice, which I appreciated. It was sufficiently creepy and disturbing, with great Super 8 short films that were easily the best part. A wonderful blend of original music and great bands, and the movie didn't rely on gore. Pleasantly surprised.

I'm more disappointed than anything, since I was more creeped out by the trailer than by the movie itself. I think it mostly results from things being out of order; the supernatural elements start too early, and the scariness peaks too soon. It's still a reasonably good horror movie, but I would have really loved to see a film that's basically "Capote" for 75% of the runtime before it diverts into a supernatural horror, made in a way that wasn't completely predictable.

An invested production with good directing, acting and visual design and some great ambient music, and I'm loath to admit that it has its frights if you turn your mind off. Considering Derrickson and Cargill's obvious talent, it's a shame that they rely so heavily on conventional formulas. For what it's worth, Sinister is an exceptionally well-crafted Hollywood horror film. While the story is relatively standard fare, there are stylistic flourishes that would befit a more ambitious, original work. The fact that it opens with an appropriately sinister home movie of a whole family being hanged, filmed on Super 8 with its malevolent grain, is unusual enough to be worthy of praise. In fact the film's strongest moments are these finely scored reels that lend much of the evil tone.

The story has been told before and the viewer goes into the film likely with their predictions granted. However, the atmosphere and the sound startles hard, and left this lady tense throughout. For a recent horror movie, it's refreshing to see its creators know their strong suits and work with it. Also, Ethan Hawke led a convincing performance, allowing the viewer to tip-toe and fall down beside him.

Sufficiently creepy and disturbing. That was about it though. This film is much better than many modern horror movies coming out, but its pros were most definitely outweighed by its cons (i.e. jump scares, unnecessary length, predictable "twist" at the end etc.). Creepy, sinister and insidious horror film is more clever and creative in its specifics than the overall arc - the flat, cold inevitability in the construction of the "home movies" are bone chilling; it may seem odd to say this is a role that Hawke was born to play, but it's hard to think of another actor who could bring this unique mix of earnestness and intense obsession to the role (even handily resolving the usual "but why wouldn't they just run?" questions typical for the genre).

I am a little bit torn about this one because it had some really good moments and some really bad moments. What I liked were the creepy home movies with the eerie music, they were really just driving in the discomfort and dread in an effective way. The jump scares are such a cheap way of doing horror and yet most horror movies just jump into that crazy train, anyway. The 'creepy kids' were not too effective either and their stupid theatrics just took the scary out of the scenes they were in.

With a satisfactory atmosphere and overall production for the genre, Sinister fails to deliver everything else after the first quarter. The shift to generic supernatural teen horror with predictable jump scares came from nowhere and ruined what could be a clever and disturbing story about a serial killer and a man's obsession with fame and his work. "Sinister" is nothing new because it has similarity with the ring.In fact the writer C.Robert Cargill had his inspiration after watching "The Ring".On the other hand however,Scott Derrickson "Sinister" is not a rip-off,because its has its own originality. The sub-plot about ritualistic paganism serial killer was not only effectively elevating the plot but also making some originality in the process.
nonetheless,it was creepy and fortunately scary too

Probably the scariest movie I've ever seen, which makes it successful in it's goal. Still, I wouldn't say I enjoyed any other aspect.

Found Footage and a writers obsession with regenerating his career are decent foundations for horror. However, the remaining elements of bog-standard 'scary' kids (long hair, look down then stare menacingly) and pretty amateurish supernatural element were very poorly worked into any sort of coherent narrative. All scares are "jump scares", the film is riddled with cliches, the soundtrack effective but repetitively grating, the ending entirely predictable. disappointing after a promising start

I was hoping for a good story and atmospheric piece, which is currently not really common thing to achieve.
Although it starts pretty standard, it grows in tension a bit and is pretty enjoyable half-way.
To avoid spoiling, just want to say children-characters here are the worst choices and they ruin whole feeling that is built over first 50 mins. Then it goes like a great race with Shelby GT on smooth mountain curvy road...disturbed by speedbump on every damn road bend. Could've been better.
