A musical remake of Ninotchka: After three bumbling Soviet agents fail in their mission to retrieve a straying Soviet composer from Paris, the beautiful, ultra-serious Ninotchka is sent to complete their mission and to retrieve them. She starts out condemning the decadent West, but gradually falls under its spell, with the help of Steve Canfield, an American movie producer. (imdb)

I watched this one to see Peter Lorre--it was such fun to see him in a musical :-) (The movie itself, actually, was just kind of average, I thought.)

an acceptable story, but nothing special. the leading lady is not impressive, and peter lorre is just down right decadent (it's really very sad). astaire doesn't have any decent dances, and the songs just not quite good enough.

Propaganda and mediocre songs aside, the dancing is smooth and some of the dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny.

Watching this, one thinks "it should be so much better than...this." But then, if you try to think how, you quickly hit a wall. The plot is embarrassing, the songs eye-roll-inspiring (second-rate Cole Porter at best), bad dialogue... Perhaps a total re-write and replacement of at least half the cast--and the director. A couple of dance sequences are the only things worth saving.

Musical remake of Ninotchka with rather mediocre songs and little chemistry between the characters. Charisse just isn't a good enough actress to capture the complexities of Ninotchka either. But it does have a decent number of laughs and is fun if you can stop thinking about how much better it could be.

Loved the Cyd Charisse mock Russian dance sequence.

Cyd Charrise dazzles amidst her tired (and, in one red-haired instance, annoying) supporting cast.

Well, musicals of the 50's are not my favourite genre. Additionally, the propaganda is downright disgusting. I really only liked Peter Lorre.

The color is magnificent, Mamoulian's direction is elegant, but somehow this movie just doesn't come together. Cyd Charisse has little personality, Fred Astair looks tired, and Peter Lorre looks very, very tired indeed. There's one great Cole Porter song ("All of You") but the rest are forgettable. Ninotchka it ain't.
