Silent Night

Poor rich people and their overly dramatic lives... While most characters are extremely annoying and the premise of the movie sounds like conspiracy theorists wrote it, there were some good things. I.e. slowly revealing what's actually going on, and why aren't there enough potatoes on the table.

Silent Night portrays a Christmas apocalypse where the personalities at the dinner table are more toxic than the approaching cloud. The upper-middle-class characters are so insufferable that their demise feels like a relief. Despite the energy from the swearing and infidelity revelation, the film is tedious to the core. Its environmental warning feels heavy handed. The entire warning could benefit from a trigger warning for its relentless smugness and itself is a punishment to watch.

A doomsday Christmas. I like a lot of the actors here. Some drab bits and some emotional and funny bits as well. Good stuff. Better than I expected to be sure. 6.5

It thought it was going to be a slasher type black comedy from having read a too short synopsis, and it ended up making me ball my eyes out for characters I spent a part of the movie thinking they're annoying.

That was a.... Christmas story.... with heavy cold war doomsday vibes. A lot of personality, foul language and a twist I was not expecting going blindly in. Quite chilling as things got serious and time was closing in. Yet they managed to give it a lot of humor regardless of the lurking disaster. The idea was almost too ridiculous. In a way, they both got me and lost me at the same time.

Silent Night is well-cast & well-performed, but the characters are annoying to the point of hurting the film when it leans into its dramatic moments. Too many scenes also feel unnecessarily drawn out. Any commentary intended about the nature of the end of civilization was weak, shallow and unconvincing. The premise is mildly amusing, but it's a film that came out during a pandemic affirming clinical advice can be wrong. I'm just surprised that gov.uk made a pill that worked that effectively.

Very good.

Stacked cast. Keira Knightley is great. I'm really starting to like Lily-Rose Depp. It has nothing to do with the fact we're the same age, I swear. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure what the point here is. There isn't much of a takeaway, all of the scenes that are meant to be sincere get botched by ill-timed jokes, & the jokes that do land still feel weird given the overall tone of the story. It's just bleak and depressing for the sake of being that. I didn't dig it.

A dark british comedy with an unsettling premise. Really enjoyed it

While the idea seems prime to showcase the uneasiness & tense nature of bringing friends & family to Christmas dinner, the movie rather just ramble on and on about what's happening for what's most of the dialogue.
