Very effective in parts, especially the much-lauded birthday party video sequence, but with massive deficits in other areas. The religious aspect doesn't bug me like it did a lot of people, but I think it's always tricky to balance allegory with solid story structure, and that's the biggest place this movie fails. Huge parts of it just don't make sense.

I really like that this is a movie about that faith that uses an alien invasion as a springboard, rather than as the focus. I found it very interesting until the end, when things were wrapped up TOO neatly. Living a life of faith is extremely difficult, and I think the ending is patronizing. Regardless, it's still a fine feature with some tense moments and strong execution of a good premise (for the most part).

People seem to love this film or hate it. I felt it was a very effective piece on faith and family that just happens to be set against the backdrop of an alien invasion. If your only takeaway from this film is the alien was silly,or their weakness, in my humble opinion you missed the point entirely. This movie so successfully portrays a believable family unit in such a short time, its beyond impressive. It also has probably the greatest "reveal" of an alien in history.

The beginning of the end for Shyamalan. Half-way through, his career heads into a nosedive it hasn't yet been able to pull out of. The moment? The big alien "reveal", which is pure goosebumps and easily the scariest bit. The problem is that we've now seen what we were previously only teased with, and the level of tension drops substantially. The movie is at its best when it doesn't show you what's out there, and instead opts to let your imagination run wild with hints of shadowy figures.

This is the best example of M. Night's constant yearning for an Americana that is gone and never coming back. It all starts via his inspirations for the picture (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Birds, and Night of the Living Dead)--stories where small-town communities fight against monstrous existential threats. But he grounds that with an allegorical obstacle to a character's faith. If you can get past those heavy handed tropes this is a well made movie with an eerie and methodical pace.

I very much like the fan theory that the invaders are demons instead of aliens as that accounts for some of the peculiar bits in their behavior. I also very much like the fan theory that Vanessa Carlton is just an alter ego of Michelle Branch. In both cases the theories don't really make the media that much better.

It's kind of sad to see that it's really the last 10 minutes of this movie that are given flack. That's really not deserved. Signs is well-shot by Shyamalan, whose direction has always been consistent. His writing isn't too bad either, with an entertaining script even with the twist. And the cast, especially Gibson, is really good. Honestly, don't judge the movie by the last 10 minutes, but by the supernatural thriller it is for the rest of it.

A real love it or hate it movie, personally I consider 'Signs' Shyamalan's greatest achievement. I love the atmosphere this film creates, and the strange dead pan performances that are given by all the cast. Signs is a brilliantly paced and wonderfully thought out film that relies on atmosphere more than plot. Its a film that demands to be watched intently in the dark, on your own, for the full effect of its most powerful moments. I also love the ending. Shyamalan's finest work by a mile.

Years later, I remember finding this movie generally well-done and watchable. But really ... water?? Set aside any scientific problems, we find beings that have crossed interstellar distances to invade (well, more like lurk and be creepy in) a water-filled planet haven't the technology to wear decent rain-gear or even carry an umbrella. But they can't figure out doors either, so maybe the aliens exile their mentally handicapped to Earth.

An engrossingly and frightening movie up until the aliens attempt to break into Hess' (Gibson) house. At this point the movie takes a complete u-turn from amazing to downright ridiculous. Do yourself a favour and turn it off at that point. The first part of the movie is downright excellent and it's so disappointing to see the rest.

Signs is that kind of movie that looks just average at first sight. Well, during this years I watched it several times. One day it was on tv, another day I was obssed with aliens so I had to watch it again, another time I found it on pay tv... yesterday they put it on Netflix. And I watched it, again. The point is: signs is a very good movie, well played, with an intense soundtrack. It looks odd only if you are distracted. Every detail explains itself. Every shot is accurate. Well done guys.

I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this movie for most of its running time. Too bad it couldn't show more restraint in the last 20 minutes or so; by insisting on using the plot to resolve themes that should have been left more understated & ambiguous, Shyamalan strips the movie of a lot of its appeal. Also turns it into one of the most inadvertently (I assume) cynical depictions of religious faith you'll see out of Hollywood.

I'm just going to say it; I love Signs. I thought this was really well done. The writing is a perfect balance of drama, horror, and even a bit of comedy. Some images in this legitimately freaked me the hell out as a kid. I also think the performances are great, even the child actors. M. Night Shayamalan's directing is very clever here. I still find myself catching things I missed on previous viewings. The hate is really unwarranted. I think it's an effective, powerful film.

So let me get this straight. Aliens invade a planet where a deadly liquid is extremely prominent, not only the oceans and rivers, but it also rains, and is always in the atmosphere (humidity). There was also way to much religion and fate in this movie. The only reason I'm giving it a decent score is because of how well directed it is.

Something about everything Shyamalan has done since this movie makes me like it less. The characters are wonderfully drawn and there is genuine heart and genuine scares. Only Mel Gibson seems to know what to do with Shyamalan's dialogue, which often wilts and flushes the film's suspense factor down the toilet. Yet I think that's the point. Signs exploits '50's Cold War UFO films as a conceptual red herring, instead trying with some success to meditate on weighty concepts like faith and determinism. The aliens’ reveal is not meant to freak you out, but validate a man's half-abandoned belief in God. One can take it or leave it.

The only conclusion I can come to is real aliens got into their heads to make them think the acting isn't horrible, the plot isn't self-serving, the logistics aren't a complete joke, and the other million things wrong with it don't exist. 'Are you the kind that sees signs, that sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky?
