on a desolate winter Dafoe tries to find spiritual enlightenment or something to fill his existential void, and amidst all the memories of fucking and regrets he might have found some peace

Immediately shows how handsomely crafted it is, yet also shows what a slog this impenetrably baffling metaphysical character study is. From one vignette to another, nothing accumulates for this fellow as he traverses between sequence that seem to be there for purely visceral effect -- some aim to bare the universal human pain, others inflict that pain in the form of boredom.

It's the notes they're not playing, I guess? Unwatchable free jazz of a movie that, frankly, lacks the spark and talent of something like mother! or, hell, even Fando y Lis. This is the upteenth Julliard-dropout's "revolutionary jazz collective" project that reeks of pretension but little else.

Abel Ferrara'dan içler acısı 1 film. Abel Ferrara'nın hayatındaki izler yaşadığı öyküsünü izlediğimiz film, Willem Dafoe'nun performansıyla izliyoruz. Dört mevsim etrafında geçen öykü, yer yer merak edici olsa da vasatın üstüne çıkamıyor. Ben bu anlatım tarzını da sevmiyorum. Filmin sonunda, konuşan balık. Damımıza damımıza kar yağdı. Dikkat ayı çıkabilir.

Viewed December 11, 2021. An abstract navigation through the subconscious - a disquisition on memory, physical being, metaphysical thought rendered in consistently imaginative scenes, filled with goofy humor and unsettling darkness. Dafoe's peerless performance is what ties this together, giving all of these clashing emotions life and, in a straightforward example of Ferrara's toying with identity and memory, playing multiple characters in conversation with one another.

Kudos to Ferrara for trying something new (for him), at least stylistically---thematically it's more of the same (i.e.guilt ridden men seeking redemption/atonement)--but this journey into the 'landscape of the soul' is marred by moments of portentous dialogue, pseudo-surrealism and just plain old silliness. If it wasn't for Dafoe functioning as an anchor, it would collapse into a jumbled heap. All in all, an interesting failure that is worth a look for fans of Ferrara.

The entire movie is about an inner journey, basically one man's vision quest. Even with decontextualized pieces of his past making up part of his hallucinations, it never really gets to the bottom of him, so I was never very invested. It does speak to Abel Ferrara's artistic integrity that he still shows such audacity, and it's an interesting experiment. The Hebrew-speaking fish says: "guarding is needed. The end is nigh". Which I googled, and it seems to be based on a tall tale by some NY rav.

Dogs, sex and dearh metal. By a mile not only the most feverish, surreal, weirdest, unpredictable Ferrara's film of this european phase, but his entire career. Film as testament conveying a journey into the soul through landscapes (ice, desert, forest, family home), memory, guilt, pleasure, inner demons, ghosts, fear, desire and ultimately loneliness. Man back to basics -- cave, hunt, survival -- but bringing the nightmares of every generation with him. Ferrara's sobriety imagery is also a blast

Can't deny it's a great idea to be in a gang in which you can only sit and speak in different languages right ??in front of Willem Dafoe. I think von Trier's The House that Jack Built is the only one who can survive this recent hell shit (like this one or Aronofsky's mother!). This is surely out of tune but it reminds me of that line "You may think the chords are going wrong, but they're not, he just wrote it like that". And yes, we may call Siberia as only a northern so
