Shunsetsu

1950
Romance, Drama
Melodrama that lovingly portrays working people who live in poverty but righteously. Kosaburo Yoshimura, the master of “women’s films,” cast Yasuko Fujita, an unknown newcomer, in the leading role for this masterpiece about the joy of love. The Yoshikawa family is a typical small town family. With only the father’s and daughter’s salaries to support the family’s six members, life is not easy. (Letterbox'd)

(ASIDES- may be hard to get with decent English subs - caution as there are other films with these titles) A well made slice-of-life (so no big action scenes) of a family living on the edge of poverty in pre-bubble Japan. Has some suspense as the heroine needs to choose between money and the guy she really likes. Somewhat let down by a jingoistic speech near the end about the righteous poor. IMO has worth as a peek at poor out of the city life at the end of an era.
