Sweet and tender while also being maybe the best movie I’ve ever seen about teenage alienation. Doesn’t have a single moment that feels even remotely artificial. Wonderful naturalistic performances and evocative cinematography. Has a lot to say about the power of empathy and staying true to yourself, especially with regards to popularity, without ever feeling cloying or saccharine. It’s 16mm Pickpocket not video you goddamn moron

Re-submitting my review of this after several further viewings. With each viewing new vistas of greatness in this film open up for me: The exceptional naturalistic camera-work and acting in this film is seriously dazzling, taking you right into the heart of the story and the mind and emotions of each character. Each character is exactly what the narrative needs them to be, while still retaining a realistic feel; any one of them could be someone you know. I firmly believe this film is perfect.

I suspect if I was 15 this would've been some compelling and interesting shit but I'm older now and high school problems just aren't interesting anymore. You don't have any friends? Boohoo, no one cares. Plus, adding a lesbian twist isn't enough to make what would otherwise just be a standard love story compelling. It's also shot on video and thus looks terrible.

Simple, completely straightforward, but I loved it. It just doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the obnoxious teen movie genre. It borders on melodrama to be sure, but it avoids the pitfalls and has an air of authenticity rarely found in a romance movie. Both Agnes and Elin are truly, thoroughly adorable, which makes everything that happens to them exciting and moving. A sweet, sweet movie.

Really hits home with the depiction of teenage life. A lot of great touching moments that don't feel forced.

Incredibly realistic movie about growing up. For someone who grew up in a small Scandinavian town in the nineties I even think that I've met all these characters, been to the parties and heard the same lines uttered. What makes it even more realistic is that everyone says stupid things (while trying to sound profound), do irrational actions, worry and overreact about tiny problems, just like real teenagers do. The dialogue is REALLY stupid, and that makes it so perfect.

Depicts teenage angst, immaturity, cruelty, and emotionality quite truthfully, while at the same time keeping it in the proper context. If anything, that honesty works against the film, since the young characters make immature decisions that make the film painful to watch in places. I still found it a very heartfelt movie about adolescence, and I found it impossible NOT to root for the two leads.

One would think that I'd eventually stop being surprised that European directors can capture what it's like to be a teenager so much more accurately and perceptively than American directors can.

What really makes this effective is how young the 2 girls are. There's an innocence to it; it's not seedy, nothing sexual really happens, which makes its value much stronger. But it's also really hilarious at the same time as its touching. I think this is a very good film for youngish teenagers to see to make sure they don't grow up to be bastards.

Cliches abound, but somehow they feel very real in this film. There are no hidden messages and no fancy cinematography, but just a very straight forward and honest story. Brilliantly acted by such young talent, and the ending is phenomenal.

Box Versátil Diversidade no Cinema.

The good part: it's pretty accurate in the "teen angst" department, with the characters changing their minds all the time and not knowing in which direction they're going (but wanting to get there fast). The bad part: who wants to relive that? This probably goes in the "wish fulfillment" category rather than a "real life" depiction.

Moodysson is clearly a pretty anarchic guy who is pretty much on side with Alexandra Dahlström's wild behavior, no matter how unfocused it is, since at least it reflects clear signs of life.

1998, Sweden. Madonna is out, Spice Girls are in. mobile phones were popping up. meanwhile you're young, gay, and stuck in the rural town of Fucking Åmål, sitting in front of a CRT monitor writing your diary about your crush in ClarisWorks. the coming out and love narrative here is intertwined with a larger generational coming of age narrative. the further away i am from this era, the better i feel it shows how despite everything alienation has stayed the same

A little film about teenagers' need for love in a otherwise bleak world. At some point the etero- vs. homosexuality distinction will sound kind of a Middle Ages argument.

A nightmare for anyone with Party Failure Anxiety disorder (or PFAD), like me. It's a rather genuine and enjoyable teenage movie that has some great cinematography, but there's also some unexpectedly lame moments, which force me to conclude that "I Want To Know What Love is" has an entirely different reputation in Sweden.

If handled in a more "Hollywood" way, this film would be a cliche-riddled turd. But as it stands, the film works. Okay, it does have a some cheesiness, but it also contains enough moments of authenticity that I can forgive the cliches (the final sequence is especially hokey). What I appreciated the most was the handling of the parents.

Charming film. Nitpicks: Inconsequential--Much of the focus on the guys (e.g. showing Markus was a jealous, aggressive ass); Agnes' brother outing her + subsequent mom/daughter talk (this just didn't go anywhere or influence anything else); Elin seeming desperate to take drugs. Unexplained--Elin's necking w/ many guys. Contrived--Elin not calling Agnes back (or quickly saying "sorry, I'll call you later" during lunch); Elin fucking Johan; Girls meeting in bathroom & getting mobbed.

A raw, visually rough work which, after all these years of wanting to see it, is breathtakingly blunt and yet retains a sweet tenderness to its story and ideas alongside its abrasiveness. Its original title 'Fucking Åmål' is the perfect choice for a film like this, a sharp work that obliterated any possibility of it being a tedious adolescent drama and yet is thoughtful in its coarseness, leading a great, emotionally rewarding ending. The wait to see this was worth it.

"Fucking Åmål" is relatively small in scope, but the realism in which it depicts adolescence and the powerful performances make it worthwhile all the same. The naturalistic camerawork and a strong script help to create a close relatability to the story and characters. In fact, we've come to be so engaged in their fates, that even the slightly cutesy and unfittingly optimistic ending doesn't bug too much.

A fairly honest depiction of the pitfalls, confusion and cruelty of adolescence. The two young actresses at the center of the film are both exceptionally good, and the simple camera style lends a Cassavetes-like intimacy. There is a certain predictability to it, however, and the ending seems a little too easy given how generally realistic the rest of it is. But perhaps it's warranted... for these characters, it's the moment that matters, not the future. Let them have the moment they've earned.
