"Did you hear about the theory that 'Snowpiercer' is the sequel to 'Willy Wonka'?" That line was my first inkling this might be about something more than just shallow, self-involved millennials with relationship issues. It improves markedly when Ben's bitchy girlfriend moves to NYC. A clever screenplay with lots of funny lines, most of which go to Sherry Cola. For good reason: with her, they are in the best possible hands. ("...I kicked her in the pussy." "Change is hard for assholes like us.")

There are moments where it launches into tirades that we hear everywhere nowadays, but when it's not doing that, this successfully tackles its themes. I don't know why it has to grind everything to a halt but it does. We get it. The audience isn't idiots. If it wasn't for that it would be an 80, for sure, because the performances are good and the dialogue is mostly clever and interesting.

Tomine's fans should be pleased. This adheres very closely to the comic. The first 1/2 did have me questioning whether or not such quiet, unassuming but thoughtful material is suited to a movie, but the second half's conflict & suspense (3rd issue) has more at stake & it works. It was disturbing to note how Woke ideas have taken over in just over 15 years. The characters no longer jokingly say "homo" anymore, & Sasha, obviously interested, no longer tells Ben to not ask permission for a kiss
