Martin banging Danes creeped me out. Schwartzman is good.

Jason Schwartzmen was perfectly cast. Steve Martin wasn't, like usual. Him banging Claire Danes is not only highly unlikely but just creepy. Another Rom/Com that is more of the same.

The performances are good all around, but the story wasn't very compelling, and Martin's dual role as rich lover and narrator is offputting.

This movie has the lamest narration ever (by Steve Martin). Claire Danes is appealing as always, and there are some pretty visuals in the movie, but not much more. It qualifies as a 'good but boring' movie you never want to see again.

The one good thing I can say about it is that it has some pretty good shots every now and then. Everything else, the plot, story, and characters, is just totally generic and uninspired. The narration was dreadful (even though it luckily only shows up 4 times).

Shopgirl needs more comedy and less self-seriousness, because the touchy feely, glum tone doesn't work overall. We all know the cast can pull off comedy.

I really dig Claire Danes in this--her ability to project vulnerability is a real strength given the plot. And Scwartzman is doing his goofy thing. But otherwise, the whole thing fell flat. Martin's narration was distracting and over-the-top (repeating things that were clear from the images), while his character was simply not that engaging. Further, I thought the film lacked specificity in order to root it in real life, particularly with Martin's character.

Shopgirl is precariously slight, but it has some intriguing moments, and Danes is luminous.

Claire Danes is hypnotic as always. Not sure about Steve Martin's character. The movie doesn't really attempt to justify her interest in him. She even admits he's boring, and he is from what we see. I don't know what to make of that. Maybe it's interesting. Or maybe it's half-baked. I'm still not sure. (Heads-up: I'm probably just jealous.)

It's the most straightforward movie with that kind of music I've seen in a long time. And still.

Standard rom-com where the obstacle takes up most of the movie. Moral of the story: Girls want money and monogamy, yawn. The leads were ok though.

Claire Danes was as adorable as she can be and Steve Martin... well, he was Steve Martin. He can act and his part was like usual: solid. The story was kind of okay, passed the time.

The three leads do a wonderful job with their roles. This is a nice character driven piece with some funny moments. All of the main characters experience some interesting changes during the film. It is also an interesting look at relationships.

There are a lot to elements to admire and recommend, none more that the unpredictable, if fitting, trajectories of its characters. For once, this movie is not a romance that hinges on who ends up with who, but how they learn and grow from the experiences they have, and somehow end up a wiser person on the other side.

Danes and Schwartzman are great in this movie, Martin has a very depressing role for himself. There are some very awkward moments in this one but a solid movie.

Writer/Star: Steve Martin creates a surprising, bold, romantic, and quirky drama. This film is totally out of Steve Martin's left field, and I have to recommend you all check this out!

Having read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a film adaptation. It reads like a series of jazz riff thoughts and observations, running rather low on actual plot -- it's the perfect read, but could it be filmable? The result is a mixed bag. The wafer-thin plot doesn't help its chances as a film, but the adaptation holds true to the original's quirky and endearing sincerity. Schwartzman is a treat, and Danes is phenomenal. A nice little movie.

Tagline: "Relationships don't always fit like a glove." Or Steve Martin's elaborate network of trusses. Or the paper tray on the Lost in Translation Xerox machine. Or a forefinger at the back of my tongue.

The sublime direction of Anand Tucker and the good cast of actors raise the production up to quality fare that starts off crass but ends up more subtly touching than similar films to tread the same path.

This film touches the part in everyone who have experienced a relationship that wasn't quite even. Great performances, with quirky characters and emotionally powerful sentiments. Perhaps Steve Martin wasn't the best fit for the role, but he did write the book.

Shopgirl looked like such a great idea, but the execution was not there. Also, I just don't care for Jason Schwarzman, as evidenced by the spelling of his name in this review.

I guess it's kind of part of the idea, but the relative lack of chemistry between any of the romantic couples in the film was sort of frustrating, and held the narrative back from ever really taking off.

I didn't hate this film, but it was blah. Maribelle is a shell of a character, defined only by some quirky sketches and a bottle of pills. I didn't care which guy she ended up with, since I didn't like them either. Apparently when you have sex with Steve Martin, you'll be bathed in a soft, warm glow. The film tries to create a mood by showing people doing nothing while somber music plays. Martin is so infatuated with his own labored prose that he reads it himself in his godawful voice-over.

Claire Danes and Jason Schwartzman absolutely rock in this quirky romantic comedy (the less said about Steve Martin, the better, who seems to confuse understated with catonic). The screenplay is a very creaky affair, and the film just can't support it for very long (the final act is tiresome). Still, I liked the film's look, especially the costume design.

A kind of cute romance without believable partners, and annoying, jolting, and unnecessary narration from the grating Steve Martin.
