Sheytan vojud nadarad

The message behind the story is powerful. The story itself is long and boring.

The three last parts were, respectively, too implausible, sentimental and tedious for my taste, but the 1st segment was arguably the strongest short film in its kind since László Nemes' With a Little Patience, just a masterstroke in the art of omitting. Making an anthology film was bound to be a tricky task if all segments aren't consistent in their style and execution, but seriously, props to Rasoulof and his crew for having shot this film in secret while risking their lives in the process.

65, 70, 50, 70

Iranian executioners living under pressure in dictatorial regime and the constant struggle between duty and, well, not just freedom, but life itself. Segments vary from family dramas -- first and last --, escape thriller and romance (my favorite one, concerning a young couple nearly torn apart after the young soldier discovers he executed his girlfriend's mentor/her family's dear professor friend. While anthology format looks attractive, it also highlights how a bit bloated and irregular it is.

I bet the only challenge for people who make this film was: how many stupid stories, characters and faces could fit in one movie.
