Good entry in the Rathbone Holmes series with a plot quite similar to Agatha Christie's _And Then There Were None_ (filmed the same year). Solid mystery-horror with an atypical ending, in that Watson is the first to solve the crimes!

The moments of suspense are upstaged here by the moments of comedy, in particular the quips of Dr Watson and Inspector Lestrade's lines of questioning. Dr Watson, when Holmes tells Cosgrove that Lestrade will arrive by train early the next morning, "Unless he got on the wring train. Huh." "Here, what was he doing with dynamite this time of the morning?" Lestrade asks about Musgrave, as though playing around with dynamite at any other time would be appropriate in such a setting!

I love Sherlock Holmes and this was a fun one. Haunting and amusing at the same time as people at castle gets knocked-off one-by-one. Visually excellent, Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce are the quintessential Holmes & Watson and they make these murder mysteries snappy. The House of Fear (1945) is like all the rest in their series. Highly entertaining!

The most comedic and purely fun film in the Rathbone/Bruce Holmes series. There is not much of a mystery here for any lover of detective novel particularly Agatha Christie novels which this resembles a bit more than Doyle. The "Good Comrades" group were a joy to watch.

3rd rathbone/bruce holmes flick i've seen and it's easily the most fun one yet. mystery has a nice edge of spookiness to it, and whether or not you figure it out early, holmes and watson get plenty to do and the pace is great as a conspiracy develops to stop them uncovering the truth.

A nice callback to old dark house styled murder mysteries with a thick veil of horror wrapped around it. The plot is somewhat guessable but Holmes is able to keep you guessing so the script is quite excellent in that regard. Towards the end Watson also has a night 'alone' in a castle that's sure to appease any spook fan. Recommended.

Well written and thoroughly entertaining. Its a shame that Watson was portrayed as a complete idiot however.

I guessed how this was going to turn out, but maybe it was only a dim memory from reading the original story. There were a lot of pointless dutch angles in the movie, but it was okay. I really feel sorry for Nigel Bruce, who always had to play Watson as a complete idiot. At the end of this movie, he was acting like a special needs child.
