More of the same, for better or worse. I did enjoy Jared Harris as Moriarty, and Stephen Fry steals all his scenes as Mycroft. I finished this movie with more excitement for a sequel than I did with the original, so of course they never made another one.

Downey Jr. is miscast and turns in a lazy performance. And who can blame him with writing like this? Aiming to appeal to the widest audience possible, Ritchie's "interpretation" of Doyle is not only a sad indicator of what sort of crap that makes money, spawning more crap in the process, he commits an even worse crime: the source material is raped beyond recognition.

I must read some of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories. From what I understand here, he must have been quite the John Woo of late 19th century crime fiction: machine guns, heavy artillery, parkour...fascinating stuff! Downey Jr. does a charming Sherlock, but I myself have always preferred Lt. Commander Data's version of Holmes.

Tedious. More an action movie, than a Sherlock Holmes story. Even RDJ is annoying in this. Honestly, compared to BBC's Sherlock this is complete shit. Also, Ritchie needs to stop with the slow-mo.

It can't come as a surprise that this sequel is much more fast-paced action than mystery, but the frantic speed makes it a little hard to keep up from time to time. That being said it was exactly as fun this time around to follow Downey and Law's antics. Casting Fry as Mycroft was inspired and Harris makes a great Moriarty.

Ritchie's Holmes is increasingly one of action and clever one liners, rather than one of mystery; The plot tries to make itself seem more complex than it is, and certain sections end up practically pointless and hard to sit through. Fortunately the dialog is solid, and the characters engaging. Lifted by the charismatic cast (Fry, yay!) and the fact that Ritchie's ever-stylish direction leads to some of the most impressive and artistically coherent action sequences I've seen in quite some time.

While the action and humor were brought back well from the first film, I can't say the same for the story. It's not bad, but it's not nearly as fun or interesting story-wise as the first. Added to the fact that it's a bit too long and some of the deductions are too ridiculous to believe I can't say I'm jonesing to watch this again. Not to mention the added ending which was absurd even by the standards that this movie's world has set up.

The banter, the action, the bromance, and Ritchie slow-mo are all a lot of fun, but then things get a little hazy. There is little mystery here, and the absolutely schizophrenic pace is tiring. While its predecessor had a definite destination it was headed to, AGoS is all over the place. RDJs over-the-top portrayal of every character, as of late, is one of diminishing returns. Yes, he is entertaining, but there comes a point where my eyes begin to roll.

If you like the first one, you will enjoy this one. In my case, more so. Ritchie seems to have found a style which really suits him, and this is a really clever, funny, well crafted popcorn movie, and I loved it. The plot/story is a BIT on the thin side but once again the interplay between Downey and Law is simply perfect. There are enough similarities to the first to be consistent, but plenty of new ideas to make it fresh. Also noteworthy, the set design, costumes and music are first rate.

Compared to the first film, this one is the illegitimate son raised in the basement, hopped up on double espressos, dressed like a hooker and dropped off in Time Square New Year's Eve. BTW, I miss detective movies where they actually detected something.

Possibly the most satisfying blockbuster of 2011, Ritchie's second foray into Sherlock Holmes lore almost makes his initial frantic effort look snail-ish slow. SH2 is almost indecipherably hyperkinetic, but helped along by flawless technique (editing, cinematography), truly inspired casting (Harris! Fry!) and some exhilarating set pieces that walk a fine line between slight exaggeration and the truly preposterous, this is as tasty a popcorn flick as you're likely to find these days.

Very much in the same vein as the previous film so if you liked or hated that one you'll probably have the same reaction here; since I liked the first one I liked this. The plot's a bit more contrived but the addition of Jared Harris and Stephen Fry make up for it. The action sequences are all competent and comprehensible, and as a bonus it actually uses slow-motion to great effect.

For fans of the previous SHERLOCK HOLMES (like me), this proves satisfying; Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law reprise their delightful double-act, joined by Noomi Rapace (underused) as a gypsy fortune-teller and Jared Harris as Professor Moriarty: a genius with just a touch of psychopathy. Guy Ritchie's direction is slick as ever, a climactic chess game (counterpoint to the climax of the plot) being especially impressive. An overly convoluted story and an iffy script frustrate; still, solid fun.

Game of Shadows is a tighter, faster-paced production than the first, but in exchange the mystery is far less interesting and the characters are a tad less developed. The best parts of the film are when Holmes and Watson use their brains to survive the action scenes, a cute gimmick from the first film that turns out to be very cool when used on a larger scale.

The action scenes? A lot of fun. The performances? Very charismatic (although Jared Harris doesn't quite match up to last film's Mark Strong as the villain). The plot? A real mess! There isn't really even the pretense of a mystery here, which is kind of a shame for a movie called Sherlock Holmes. Still, it's an amusing enough time waster.

Wasn't aware that instead of being a smart and intellectually creative-yet-disciplined detective, Sherlock was actually a super hero with premonition powers and Kung Fu. The disappointing thing is that rather than this being both a clever Sherlock mystery and a Ritchie smash-house, it turns out to be neither a Sherlock nor a Ritchie film. It's a half-born mutant child... but also not an absolute atrocity.

Watching the movie I asked myself, could any other actor than Downey play Holmes as genius and deranged? Holmes is funny, always a step a head, selfish and at times even down right childish, but at all times brilliant. Downey is perfect for the part of a morphine addicted manic depressive, at times he doesn't even seam to be acting.... now THAT'S method acting! Great fun!

The return of Holmes is a welcome one, what with Ritchie using more of his unique takes on the character that worked so well before. Harris is a compelling and restrained Moriarty, the action and camera tricks are still fun, and the humor remains. This only falls short by way of its plot, which is a little more muddling and, frankly, less interesting than the first's.

The ending saves this, but overall the action got less interesting with more generic gunplay. Was 19th century like the Wild West? The plot is not as tight as the first film and the evil plan seems less urgent. There's a whole sidetrack to gypsies that wasn't interesting to me. The worst part was that Rachel McAdams dropped out early. Fav scene: RFJ riding a miniature horse.

With the BBC's Sherlock setting the bar for the perfect Holmes portrayal, it's hard for anything else to compete. Movie doesn't have a very satisfying mystery, but it is a lot of fun. Having seen Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia just about two hours before going to the cinema, I have to say I was hugely disappointed in this new installment. The characters are going nowhere, the action is too packed with what I could only call modern warfare, and the story itself is too fast, taking too many shortcuts. Nonetheless it's an entertaining movie which you can enjoy with friends on a cold January weekday.

I'm more enthused to comment when the film in question is either great or horrible but am in this case completely detached due to its sheer mediocrity. Retains its predecessor's strengths (amusing banter, heavily stylized action) and weaknesses (silly plot, explaining past and spoiling forthcoming scenes) without bringing anything new to the table. A nothing movie.

What a pity that such a complicated and complex character is portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. and in the hands of the mixed up Guy Richie. It could and should have been an intelligent, wit and promising theme for a movie..The humour is forced and lame, there is a plot but it is not represented in the rank of Sherlock Holmes class..it's all mixed up and I don't like the result. Guy Ritchie makes a 2nd Sherlock Holmes film for people who don't particularly like Sherlock Holmes, or perhaps think they do because they like "Sherlock". Like that show, Robert Downey, Jr's Holmes is essentially a super hero who uses his deductive powers to do impossible things, with about 60% more spastic action than we get on TV. It's not a terrible movie. Some of the action sequences are okay, and Jared Harris steals the film as Moriarty. It's just a spectacularly empty film.

I will say, however, that I personally always enjoy these types of movies. That, and both Robert Downey Jr and Johnny Depp give very personable and quirky performances. This is your basic 'fun' movie.

This showcases Sherlock Holmes as a British Kung-Fu master fighting 19th century henchmen. Ritchie saw some Jackie Chan movies and decided that's the direction he wants to go with this. Jude Law and Jared Harris are the two standouts in this with their acting. RDJ is fast becoming a parody and someone probably needs to rein in his quirkiness overloading every character he plays. Too bad this is so subpar because there are great set pieces here especially the artillery scene in the woods.

Shockingly fabulous in all respects but its periodic stretching of credulity (I don’t mind), and Sim, Noomi Rapace’s character, is somewhat underdeveloped as an emerging lead character. There is already so much going on that there wasn’t much time to complicate matters with making her a more complex factor - for instance, feeling out of place at the Swiss gala ballroom. If nothing else, you can sense the fun that the cast (and director) no doubt had while making this, but a sense of a scattered lack of discipline makes it a struggle at times, especially with Downey's incessant riffing; fun at first, but needed to be under better control. When the plot comes into focus, it's a reasonably engaging mystery, but one wonders why use the "Sherlock" name at all, so displaced from the character - surely Downey and Law could sell this without added brand recognition?

An interesting adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, with more of an action focus.

I remember the good ol' days when Guy Ritchie would have only a handful of scenes that were Ritchie-fied: several extreme close-ups juxtaposed quickly against one another... Slow-mo shots to intensify the mood... It's almost as though this movie couldn't stop shooting close-up or in slow-mo. With that said, it was still an entertaining watch.

A Game of Shadows contains everything that made the original as fun as it was. In a much less focused way. The entire second act is throwaway for the most part. Downey Jr. and Law's interactions are still fantastic and the ending wraps things up perfectly. Showcasing the stellar talent of Jared Harris.

Really fails to capitalize on the good will bought from the charms of the first movie. Everything already feels tired and some of the added action set pieces in this film feel uninspired. The ending is just atrocious.

Robert Downey Jr takes the iconic SH role with aplomb. While this is certainly not the primarily mental sleuth some may know from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works, the modern interpretation of the character is tremendously fun to follow about as he unfurls mysteries with a more brawler-like, but no less intelligent disposition. A more built-for-blockbuster Holmes it may be, but that does not stop it from being a pretty good movie.

I liked it. i liked Robert Downey Jr.'s charisma and his earnest and his portrayal of a slightly insane Sherlock Holmes. I like Jared Harris as Moriarty. I just liked this movie.

The humour in the sequel is really disruptive, particularly where Watson is concerned. On the other hand, we get a real villain this time. Take the this and the first one, smash them together, remove the tone deaf humour from this one and Mark Strong from the first, and you've got something.
