The production value is really slick and Gillette played Sherlock with experience. The romance angle is nice and leaves the final act with a lot of melodrama, similar to City Lights' reveal. This felt more like an action movie than a sleuthing mystery. Moriarty looked like a cartoon villain. Fav scene: the disguise reveal made me lol like it was Mission Impossible.

Thanks to the wonderful restoration job recently done we finally get to see William Gillette 100 year old version of Sherlock Holmes (1916) in excellent quality! A Holmes investigation that's well structured with superb acting to boot. The production quality is above the usual levels of a 1916 film as well making this nearly 2 hour play a must for any Sherlock fan!

What a fantastic score. I am amazed at how well it fits the mood of the movie. And some shots, the complete darkness fight scene with one dot of light, the cigar, was so nice. But the story itself lets some things to be desire. Probably because it’s early age, it doesn’t quite know how to deal with Sherlock: we get no deductions, no explanation as to how he manage to know some stuff, and no intrigue about what gonna happen next. The worst offense here though is only giving us 5 minutes of Watson

"This film is an exact reproduction of the play that has been performed to great acclaim for the past five years throughout America and England. The actors in the film are the same ones from the play." Slow, stilted and boring; you can't create a cinematic experience for the viewer by filming a theatre production. This is not to question Gillette's influence on shaping the character we know as Sherlock Holmes, but to suggest that Gillette should have stayed on the stage (away from the camera).
