A fun movie, Barrymore is a good Sherlock, but it strays far from my expectations of the Sherlock character and the pacing could really use some work.

It's got a good story and was most likely a great play, But these kinds of stories just don't work that well in silent cinema.

Barrymore makes a good attempt to look the part, but not much happens.

The most interesting part about this movie is the actors: young moustache-less William Powell is almost unrecognizable, the Scrooge-looking Moriarty is soo lame, famous witty-man Roland Young was good, and John Barrymore nailed the role. It is certainly an improvement over the 1916 version, but not by much; there is no thrill nor action, and again, more pointless romance.

A nice production for the time, if a bit slow going. It probably worked better on stage; as a silent, it only gives Barrymore so much to work with. I did like his "master of disguise" moment, at least.

Terribly boring with too many dialog cards, and not enough holmes-ian deduction (or more logically accurately called induction). We get a bit of action toward the end, but nothing to merit the mind numbing boredom that leads up to it.
