Not bad, and rather sweet. Zach struggles to overcome his white trash upbringing to be with the almost-too-good-to-be-true Shaun, but his manipulative cunt sister does everything she can to prevent it. Brad Rowe is great as Shaun, and Trevor Wright does repressed/conflicted pretty well. Generally good supporting cast, with a great kid.

The script leaves a lot to be desired sometimes, but it's a really charming film nonetheless. It feels honest.

Pretty basic, but far above average when compared to similar films. The story is good, but they don’t do much with it, and severely underutilize most of its supporting cast. Random observation, but the main actor oddly reminds me of Jeremy Allen White, particularly the way he speaks. It’s good for what it is, but not ground breaking, even in 2007.

As so many have said, unhelpfully and predictably, the basic outline of this film reads pretty rote. But two performances -- the brother and sister played by Trevor Wright and Tina Holmes -- not only ring true but give weight and add complexity to the coming-out plot machinations. Despite what tone-deaf Ebert says, Wright is wonderful in this role. But Brad Rowe falls flat. Also nice to see gay characters surfing, skating and tagging rather than designing, kvetching and whoring around.

"The first project of the here! gay television network's new movie initiative, Shelter regrettably plays closer to Lifetime fodder." - Fernando F. Croce

The best acting I've seen in a long time. Trevor Wright's performance floored me.

Very nice. It felt very real, unlike most movies, where you get that whole "This wouldn't happen in a million years," "People don't really act like that" vibe. The situation and the personalities felt like things I'd see in my own life, which is why I think the movie's pretty great. I really got tired of the guy's macho, Califoria rhetoric though.
