We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson's case, by shouting out one word - SHAZAM! - this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult superhero Shazam.

Just a blast of a movie. The actors are really good, even the younger cast. Levi is absolute charm as a 14-year-old given bigger responsibilities, and Strong is a great villain with a backstory that fairly empathetic. The CGI isn't always great, but it probably isn't too noticeable because it's a pretty movie that's just a lot of fun, thanks to a story thats full of heart and very humorous. I'm not sure what else there is to say. It's a really well-made movie that's a lot of fun!

While the quality of DCEU movies is definitely on the rise, and this one is a solidly entertaining flick, as a whole there is still a major issue, the movies are tonally inconsistent, ranging from serious, dark, to facetious and childlike. This one is on the ladder end of the spectrum and succeeds because of it. But if the DCEU has any hope of duplicating the success of the MCU, they'll need to take a more whollistic, long term approach in conjunction with staggeringly large piles of money.

An ancient wizard gives his powers to a punk kid living in a foster group home, turning him into a superhero. There's bright colors and bloodless CGI fights and lots of metahumor...it's essentially the family friendly version of Deadpool for the DC universe. I've always felt superhero movies are somewhat inherently silly, so it's nice to see ones that don't take themselves seriously at all. Five bonus points for the one dimensional teenage bullies who literally spit on a baby.

Standard-to-above-average Marvel Cinematic Universe fare. However, the fact that it is firmly and proudly set in the DC Universe makes it more of a revelation. Good to know DC is capable of making something this silly and fun.

What's this? A fun uplifting DC film, that doesn't take itself seriously? And it was a hit at the box office? Seems like a concept you might want to keep exploring Warner Bros. I'm glad that Zacary Levi is now the lead of a superhero franchise, as I've always been a fan of his since Chuck (an underrated and under watched show that you should go watch now) The best parts are definitely the training sequences, but the 7 Deadly Sins creature designs were great as well.

I would say that I walked in not really knowing what to expect, and what I got was actually fairly enjoyable throughout. Sure, Shazam! is the Jimmy Fallon of superheroes in this movie, and sure, Mark Strong doesn't really present a well-rounded or overly imposing villain (although his few scenes of geared-up violence were actually pretty refreshing in the context of this movie). There's room for this in the lexicon of this genre, but I can't say that I particularly loved it. Worth checking out.

a movie that smartly realizes the philosophical (and comedic) implications of being a superhero are more interesting than the physical. it also feels like a movie from an earlier — and better — era, with some truly jarring kills making for stakes that feel somewhat real. Levi's performance is a stand-out and Mark Strong has never been better as an Angry Bald Guy. above all else, it's the rare mainstream film willing to call out the true villains of American society: single moms

Shazam & esp Sivana bear little resemblance to their comic roots which is no doubt, a smart move. Fully playing up the idea that the hero is an adolescent in a man's body distinguishes him from other heroes, makes for comedy, & enhances children's identification with him, but the kid appeal also kills a lot of the suspense in the 1st hour as anyone old enough to drink waits for the inevitable "chosen one" moment. Still the power efx are great, the training is fun & Levi's fantastic

Ultimately a kids movie, with a few surprisingly dark moments considering. It's fun and well acted. Observing the "civilian" side of a massive superhero universe is clever, taking into account social media, merchandising, and public opinion of supers. The moments where Shazam! and Freddy explore the newfound privileges of adulthood are funny, but one can't help imagine what this movie could have been given the Deadpool treatment. Still, this is a family-friendly affair with good feels.

Does good work in the places where origin stories tend to do good work (Exploration of powers, comedy), but also falters where they tend to falter. (Weak villain, overly long climax and uninspired set pieces.) The foster family part of the movie was ham-fisted, but in an endearing and sweethearted way. Zachary Levi was credibly charming, but didn't feel like the same person as the kid. A kids movie at heart, which makes several of the more violent, intense scenes feel way over the top.

Easily the best DCEU movie so far - extremely funny and likeable, with a great cast and well-made action sequences. It drags on a bit, especially in the finale, the characterisation is rushed at times, and there’s too much slo-mo, but it was overall a very enjoyable experience. Levi hits exactly the right tone throughout, while Strong’s character and performance are much better than I expected from the trailers, if still one of the weaker elements. More like this, please, Warner Bros!

This one definitely exceeds expectations. I was really surprised. Just don't expect a super hero action flick. It's hard to believe but this is a family film like they did in the 80's and 90's. This is probably a long forgotten genre. Films like The Paper Brigade, we don't see them anymore. Man, most of the teenagers probably hated this film.

There's a lot to like in Shazam! Levi's performance and his chemistry with the kids. The execution of the foster home. Batson's (Angel) quest to find his mother and how it is dealt with. The humour. Alas the direction and editing of the film didn't quite work for me. The action is a little bit lame as is the CGI, rarely giving a sense of peril and more often just feeling tepid. Essentially a good superhero film, in an age of superhero fatigue that adheres to as many tropes as it subverts.

I admit that I have hardcore superhero fatigue. I’ve quit every superhero TV show - didn’t even finish Daredevil season 3 - and I’ll go see Avengers 4 but after that I think I want like a 12-to-18-month break from any superhero media. But that said this was a pretty fun bit. Some solid laughs and I respect the way the director made a roughly half-the-usual superhero budget stretch where it counted.

It was pretty good, but felt a bit spread thin. Not sure what I would take out though because it all felt fitting. One thing I do wish was for Billy to feel a bit more heroic. Like it had those moments where I should've felt that, but it came across more going through the motions rather than that swelling of heroism in your gut the best of the genre can elicit. Worth a watch though. Mark Strong is a good baddie.

I cannot possibly hate this film, especially considering how glorious the third act was and how relevant Billy's brothers and sisters end up being. A really wonderful play on 'found family' and building connections. More of this, please! I've loved Zachary Levi ever since 'Chuck' and he was born to play this version of 'Big' as a superhero film. I don't know if it's the best DC have made, but it's probably the one with which I had the least problems. It's a fairly simple story but it's a got a lot of charm and it's genuinely funny. The dramatic parts didn't work quite as well, but I liked how it riffed on a bunch of superhero movie tropes. Zachary Levi was good, but I couldn't say the same for his younger counterpart. It's fun, but at this point I expect more from my superhero movies. The villain isn't memorable at all but Billy himself has a decent enough character arc and because of the family interactions there's some heart. I don't have any other complaints; the action hit, the comedy mostly worked, it looked good. I'm a weirdo who loved the Snyderverse and while they've certainly MCU'd up since, there is an element of darkness here that I enjoyed.

It's wholesome, lighthearted fun with some of the edge that older, 1980s kids movies had. An easy way for movies to get my approval is to use as many practical special effects as they can, even if it's just to do something as simple as light up a cheesy superhero costume like Shazam! does. I didn't like the character or acting of Freddy, the crippled kid, nor the cliche tension between him and Shazam that serves as the B plot of the story.

Good natured superhero saga suffers from a basic familiarity in its source elements (we're basically stuck in a Super/Batman combo origin story) and a hero in Levi/Angel who is more a collection of quips than a fully fleshed character in either guise. While Sandberg can't quite bring any dynamism behind the camera, a likable support cast help guide the film through some rocky (and overlong) terrain - a nice bit for Glover, and some expert snarling from Strong, help maintain interest.

Levi definitely kept things light and fun and that translated well for most of the film as Billy came to terms with being true to himself. It didn't really make for anything new and unconventional in the way of storytelling. What ultimately saves the film is how easy it is to like most of the characters given the fun loving nature of the kids set within a realistic world which allowed for the surreal to take place. Fun and hopefully more of what we can expect from DC.

Shazam was good but it wasn't something that really attracted me. There were some fun parts in the movie like when the rest of the crew showed up and just some of the high jinx that ensued after Billy Batson became a superhero. Most of it was the kind of stuff that one would do if one was a 14-year-old and suddenly became a superhero. It's easy to see that Warner wants to turn this into a franchise but, for me, it fell kind of flat and I doubt that it will get another chance at becoming better.

Solid performances from a talented cast, particularly Levi 's as the goofball leading hero, combine with plenty of wit & self-aware charm to create one of the most enjoyable & easily accessible superhero movies to come out in recent times. Though the script definitely has its iffy moments, and the villain is underwhelming at best, there's still a lot to like here- especially the strong themes of family that tie it together. The actual superhero parts of this movie didn’t work at all for me. However, the other elements of the film work great. Billy and Freddy’s friendship is really touching, the fish-out-of-water super power stuff is predictably funny, and everything with the foster family was lovely. Captain Marvel starts out too slow but eventually picks up the pace once the titular character is introduced. Taking notes from the Heroes series and Kickass movies they have some fun with the sillyness of the formula. Unfortunately, once the badguy comes into play Sandberg forgets what he was doing and it turns way too serious and Dark-Knightey. The movie also overdoes the drama, which doesn't really jive with the rest. At the end of the film you've forgotten it was fun in the first half.

Great concept, well executed. Zachary Levi's boyish charm works well here and forms the backbone of the film. Funny and mostly entertaining; it's definitely a step up from previous DC films. If there's something to criticise, it's that the threat scale seems so small and has a fairly stock standard villain. As reliable as Mark Strong is, it feels like he's done this many times before. This shoots for that 80s-kids-flick style of realistic kids in fantastical, sometimes scary situations, and saying things like "shit!" about it, and for the most part the film achieves that. The cast is great, especially Levi and the kids, and the humor is pretty consistent. Harmless and safe superhero fare but brings little new to the table as a result. Plays a lot of the same notes as Penny Marshall's 'Big', literally in one scene, and the scenes figuring out his superpowers are some of the highlights. Housou is an odd casting choice for a dying ancient character so I presume there's scope for him to be younger in a future film, but to be honest I'm not that excited to see a sequel if it's likely to be more of the same.

I actually liked it a lot, with the exception of the typical CGI punch festival at the end. But even then, the excellent comedy angle and heart-warming family dynamics make it watchable.

Really nothing special. Just another superhero movie with some dumb laughs and a lame ending. Don't watch it for the lame (back)story, but just for the easy watch and the action

Takes so many shortcuts with its emotions and characters, but otherwise kinda solid watch on plane

Has nice fun with the idea of a teenager trapped in an adult superhero's body

i don't want to be too harsh here, but there's a difference between having a childlike charm and being childish. shazam tries too hard to be a feel good christmas movie, forgetting that it also needs a compelling story and a decent plot. not terrible, but quite forgettable, which, i guess is an improvement for dceu.

A lot of heart and plain old fun more than make up for some of the weaker plot elements.

Shazam! Another fun entry into the DC universe. Like most, it had its problems, but it was still fun. I think they are running out of DC characters though.

The tone is a mess; jokes are flat, skews to childhood wish fulfillment fantasy but has kids saying "shit" and monsters biting off heads. Not sure who it's aimed at.The headless superman cameo at the end is an embarrassment. Aquaman remains the "best" DC movie somehow

Hate superhero movies, but this one was quite entertaining.

Tonally inconsistent, chocked full of plot holes and dodgy CGI. I enjoyed it a lot nonetheless.

? Very funny. ? Levi superb & Mark Strong v fine as usual ?Too childish (I know its meant to be) for my usual tastes. Yet, I am scoring high (as, until final 10 minutes, I had a great time.) ?Also as it is SO, SO, SO good for DC to have finally taken the stick out of its arse & got on anti-depressant meds. ?Thank God they didn't let Snyder go all 'serious', 'adult', dull and damn boring with this kid-friendly, silly story --- Crazy busy ? - hope 2 fill in review (in detail)
