Excellent story about an important subject that avoids predictable turns. Beautifully shot and acted. Superb.

Liked it quite a bit for a young adult melodrama, but god damn the PSA at the end is one of the biggest mood killers I've ever seen.

Zhou Dongyu is compelling as the lead, as always, but I would have appreciated a more focused story. The film making could use a lighter touch; it has to make every point by driving it into the ground.

Quite good. Very well acted by all involved. Did not end the way you might expect, also good. Harsh topic.

Engrossing and often disturbing melodrama on bullying and lack of care and protection of the Chinese authorities regarding its predatory educational system -- also a statement on how late capitalism is so destructive to the less privileged; mom works selling illegal stuff and leaves her teenage girl alone at home almost all the time, on her own to deal with pressure to 'make it' and try to not freak out in school. Police procedural section -- last one -- doesn't register so well as the rest.

A strong film about two youths who form an unlikely alliance in the face of high-school bullying and college entrance exams.

Well intentioned, heartfelt screed against bullying and intimidation packs far too many disparate elements into its screenplay which may well have been an effort to beef up a thin narrative, but makes the movie feel scattered and disorganised, even losing sight and footing on the issue it seems to want to really focus on. Some nice cinematography combined with sincere performances from the two leads (even if their characters make little sense) keep it just watchable.

Highly unpredictable Romance/Crime/Thriller/Coming of Age movie. Did the genre sound overstuffed? Cause the film feels like it at times, too much is packed into its runtime and even than the finale feels like drags and waste the runtime anyway. But Better Days overall is a great movie that is able to focus on it's central theme while never feeling predictable or cheesy. Technically its beautifully shot and the two leads are fantastic

An overwrought bullying melodrama from the urban hell hole of Chongqing where two outcasts from different social classes struggle not to become expendable. Its atmosphere is down and dirty poetry, and the acting full of hurt and pain, but nobody trusts the material to breathe, to live outside of movie conventions. The relentless editing alone creates a tightness in your chest.

An incredibly engaging story that was entertaining throughout. The young actress Dongyu Zhou, besides being adorable, was exceptional in her portrayal of the bullied school girl. Jackson Yee was also satisfying in his role. The subject was difficult at times and portrayed some tragic events. It felt authentic and genuine, even sweet at times. I was slightly disappointed by the hurried ending, but after the final credits began to role, they circled back and provided closure.
