With Gandhi fever running wild in India at the time, there is a conflict between the characters if violence or passive resistance is the best way to independence. But naturally the main focus is on a tormented romance and you get plenty of songs to express that. Pure Bollywood, except there being a serious tone, keeping the nonsense at a minimum.
