A great "Blaxploitation" movie, the acting is kinda weak, but who cares, everything else is wonderful. The music, the cinematography, the storyline, and everything else you can throw in. And if you don't like it, then shut your mouth!

Shaft, an urban anti-hero, is a cool asshole private detective that you can't help but love to watch. The film itself is quite similar. Like John Shaft it's rough around the edges but you can't help but like it because of an indescribable sum of it's parts. Basically put this film is simply cool in it's execution and offers something you won't get anywhere else. It's an experience everyone should have.

Richard Roundtree is great in the lead role of this film. The soundtrack is great for this movie. There are a number of interesting scenes and moments in this film. Overall I would recommend this 1970's classic.

The best part about it is clearly the theme song, but its still a fairly fun look at a period of time in movie making.

shaft is supremely cool, while still being an eye rolling-ly cheesy movie. this is my first introduction to the original blaxploitation movies, and i have to say, i'm officially a fan.

Shaft is just cool. As a hero, he's up there with Clint Eastwood's Man with no name and Yojimbo as just pure cool action heroes. It's a just a fun movie, and it shouldn't ask you to be deep or thick or any other obtuse adjective. Just enjoy it, leave your pretenses at the door.

Dispatch from the golden age of gorgeous, shaggy film grain. "Shaft" is a neo-noir film that plunges into the deepest, darkest shadows of Harlem and Greenwich. Given the guerilla-style on-location cinematography and the amateurish sound design, sometimes that renders the action inscrutable, a melange of grain, darkness and flashes of color. But it's a beautiful film. Gordon Parks created images rivaling many of his more well-regarded contemporaries.

Richard Roundtree’s electrifying charisma and Isaac Hayes’s funky, energetic soundtrack alone make this a must watch. Blaxploitation noir in its purest form. Dig it!

Like a PI jaywalking across a busy New York street, the plot is a little hard to follow (bad sound editing doesn't help) but the vibe is immaculate, thanks to the fantastic score, the detailed production design matched by perfect framing (lots of gritty city shots and cool 70s interiors), and the moody, hardboiled noir dialogue (our super chill titular detective and sweaty cop Vic are a great pair here-"Have a chair, John" "I don't like your chair"). Can you close this review for me, Shaft?

Nothing too special, but has a certain gritty charm, and also a good sense of what the audience came for. Enjoyable.

An important movie in many ways, I think I found the background and production of this movie more interesting than the movie itself. Plot-wise this one is pretty disjointed and fails to really make things tense or interesting, but I can appreciate the importance it had for black movies and the blaxploitation genre in its time.

One of the better blaxploitation flicks I've seen. Richard Roundtree is a top macho and every scene with him is a delight. His interaction with the police folk is pretty amusing too, whereas the action scenes are a tad lackluster. The film had a dark and gritty feel at parts, with the unexpected humorous bits striking a harsh and cynical note. Overall a decent entertainment.

Shaft is badass. Everything about this movie bleeds cool. Shaft is a private eye who is tasked with finding the kidnapped daughter of a boss in Harlem. He find out that the daughter was kidnapped by the mob and he is being played by his client. Shaft is smart. He doesn't take any shit from anybody. The script is well written with a lot of period language throughout. The music is awesome and fits with the subject matter. It's a movie I could watch again and again.

Shaft's value as a pop culture artifact far exceeds its actual quality, and it's less over the top and camp than the blaxploitation films that followed, which arguably makes it less entertaining, but Parks was not without talent, and racial tensions aside, he works this conventional material to the best of his ability with the help of Roundtree, who carries it through numerous narrative lulls. A skilled use of a telephoto lens and Hayes' iconic theme help.

Leads up to a great climax that slowly builds up pressure until it explodes out in excitement. Everything before it is merely serviceable -- Shaft is a pretty cool character and all, though the script/dialogue could've made him cooler or more engaged with his search and rescue.

A straight-up detective/action movie. Historically, it has one of the first black "superhero" leads; it's also filled with black-white tensions which dates it considerably. It's still a decent watch.

An important film, to be sure, in its bringing of a "black world" to the forefront of a feature film. In doing so, race relations in America are highlighted, all while Shaft has the pleasure of getting the upper hand on white men (and one woman). The music is fantastic, of course. The whole thing, however, feels pretty broad and even a problematic in its early 70s embrace of easy sex.

Probably the best soundtrack ever. The songs have pervaded the popular culture so deeply that; I felt that the movie was actually a visual representation of Hayes' masterpiece. The story and the character Shaft are very entertaining too. "Who is the man...." phrase has been a part of our inner family slang for a long time; now we have seen its origin too.

Although the action scenes were far and few in between, I quite enjoyed them - especially the shots from first person POV. The rest of the movie moved incredibly slow, but was picked up by the charisma of Richard Roundtree as John Shaft. Isaac Hayes also supplies one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.

Pretty fun and only a little cheesy. Mostly it works as detective story with a civil rights angle and a light enough tone to throw in some one liners, some sex and some over the top action. Oh and it has a great score, but everyone knows that.
