Wow! Took me 30 years to see this one! Excellent performances by Anthony Hopkins, Debra Winger and Joseph Mazello in this drama and unusual love story.

Hopkins' performance is so magnetic, so unique, so deeply human, it makes it well worth sitting through all the terrible sadness.

Somewhat overwritten, but the performances by Hopkins and Winger are top-notch.

I really like Hopkins' Lewis. He's very capable, very smart and unquestionably flawed, and the film doesn't sugarcoat any of these aspects. It makes him sympathetic without ever making you feel sorry for him, which allows the film to explore his flaws a bit without becoming too preachy. It can be a little heavy handed, but it fits the characters so it never feels like it's the film telling you things but rather Lewis realizing them. It's all a bit too constrained by period drama style, though.

What a sad story and for me it's more a drama than romance and a great performance of Hopkins. It's the first time I see him crying in a movie, normally he played a bad guy in other movies. Good movie but the first hour was very slow.

Ironically, the made-for-TV version of this story with Joss Ackland and Claire Bloom is a HELL of a lot better than this one

A capable drama from Attenborough that is pretty unremarkable in the telling. However, the story is such a good one as Lewis is gradually humanized by giving himself over to another. That process makes the film for me, and provides a measure of wisdom that I find important and instructive.
