Shadowboxer

Terminally strange mix of seedy underbelly, crime movie and bizarre romance – Mirren and Gooding make for about as mismatched and passionless romantic partners as you would imagine, and Daniels (and Lipz) seem determined to rub their audiences noses into some quite grubby and unpleasant situations – the central morality play that ensnares Gooding and Mirren is an interesting one, but the aforementioned lack of chemistry between the actors makes it difficult to become invested in the melodrama.

This was one of the strangest things I have ever bared witness to.

Sleazy and attractive, Daniels' hitman tale about sex and violence -- sons killing their daddies, a man hooking up with a lady that could be his mom, a man who fucks and kills -- feels often overtoned, but only because this is the way trash films should be: they must not hide their bad taste, their cheap nudity and vicious sex scenes, and their lousy editing -- Cuba getting laid with Helen, preparing to kill her and remembering when he shot his father; this is hilarious -- and soundtrack.

I enjoyed this film. The movie is dark and certainly not for everyone. Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding were both great in the lead roles. It was nice to see an interracial relationship for a change.
