One of the most susepenseful films I have ever seen. I was absolutely blown away by the intense game of cat and mouse played between Cotten and Wright. In my opinion, Joseph Cotten's Uncle Charlie is a much greater Villain then Anthony Perkins infamous Norman Bates character. Shadow of a Doubt reminded me a lot like M, for they are both twisted stories, yet both the villains from there respective films are still so human. A really underappreciated Hitchcock, arguably his finest.

The artistic use of shadows is amazing. Everything has a tense undertone that carries the Cotten/Wright dynamic so well. Ending feels a little rushed, otherwise I totally love it.

Shadow of a Doubt is quite unique among the Hitchcock films I've seen in that it has no major mystery to it. The ending on the train was a bit awkward, and I really found myself wishing they'd gone with something less dramatic. I'm thinking something like the ending of The Birds, only instead of vaguely frightening birds it'd just fade out on an image of uncle Charlie smiling as he leaves on the train, making it clear that he hasn't changed at all. But I quibble; I enjoyed the film a lot.

There's not a lot of mystery for most of the heart of Shadow of a Doubt, so the movie relies on the cat-and-mouse game between Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright, which carries the movie along and provides it with its suspense and tension. It's really interesting to see Cotten as a force of evil when he's typically cast as a well-meaning blunderer of sorts. Other than some hokey characterizations and dialogue early on, and a really obnoxious kid actress, this is a first-class Hitchcock noir.

One of hitchcock's best. Cotten plays uncle Charlie perfectly as con man who has an entire small town eating out of his hand. Hitchcock adds small touches everywhere from the precocious little girl, to the silly discussions between the father and his neighbour.

From the outset, there’s no doubting that Cotten’s Uncle Charlie is a villain, but perhaps the point is to suggest how easily sinister figures can lurk unsuspected among gooey-eyed communities. Either way, it means there’s only a fraction of the intended tension, but an able cast do well to cover for the resultant predictability. It makes little sense that this was Hitchcock's favourite of his own pictures though.

hitch the repressed catholic understood white picket fence america as an eden constructed to veil an underlying violence and perversity. he felt the suffocating falseness of its most precious institutions, the allure of the noir's ride along the edge of the abyss. here, upholding the comforting lie of civilisation is a tragic but necessary sacrifice, the fallen suffering in silence for the innocent, explaining why his career is one of depraved truths hopelessly overflowing a canned conservatism.

A lot of noir movies are about big-city evil lurking in a small town, but I think this is the best of them. However, I must say the detective work is pretty shoddy at times. Of course, it's necessary for the story to keep Uncle Charlie out of the hands of the law, but it really does make Graham and Saunders look kinda foolish.

Alfred Hitchcock taunting us, keeping us guessing the entire way. I was surprised at how well Joseph Cotten took to the role. He wasn't always the most interesting actor around, but here he balances the shades of darkness nicely, while easily turning on the charm thinking it's all just a case of mistaken identity. Teresa Wright terrific in her part too. Not as thrilling as some of Alfred's major suspense movies, but provides a addictive experience you can't take your eyes off.

By far the best thing about this is Joseph Cotten's performance. He plays Uncle Charlie with just the right balance of charm and menace. I also really enjoyed the morbid, comical conversations between Herb and Joseph. However, the music was frequently overbearing and often felt out of place, the children were annoying, and the plot didn't have that intriguing edge to it that most Hitchcock stories do. I enjoyed this overall but it's not of my favorites.

It takes a fantastic actor to make me practically fall in love with a crazed serial killer, and thank goodness for Joseph Cotten. In every scene, you can't help but be drawn to him and to want to understand just what made him turn out this way. The script is layered ingeniously, a careful observer can pick up subtle things like the underlying dysfunction of Charlie's seemingly perfect family. I love the film noir-esque techniques of manipulating light and shadow. My favourite Hitchcock ever.

The interaction between Wright and Cotten is flawless, which is why I looked past the (at times) annoying acting. Cotten plays the villain to perfection, not trying to fight his improper behavior but rather makes sure nobody unravels the truth, a reason why I found him less disturbing than Perkins in Psycho, but rather smarter, sneakier and far more effective. This film was a thrilling ride, featured a stylish execution of plot and is arguably Hitchcock's best. Recommended !!!

Good Hitchcock, but I don't think it stands up to his best work. It's a film that would have been among many directors' best but probably doesn't hit the top 10 for Hitch. Wright is very much giving off in love with rather than affectionate toward her uncle in the first half, and I'm not sure to what extent she's trying to do that. Cotton is very good and the supporting cast is full of fun, recognizable character actors.

Such a gem both in terms of off screen violence - the scene where young Charlie realizes uncle Charlie is the rich widow killer, crane shot leaving her among shadows, is just brilliant - and provocative storytelling, as this plays out as a mystery thriller about the nasty stuff you don't tell family, hideous things happening under your rug we end up ignoring for the sake of optics -- uncle Charlie is always flirting with young Charlie, she knows but can't tell mom, otherwhise she would collapse.

The Hitchcock touch means film is never less than compelling; you can see the seeds of BLUE VELVET here, with Cotten's subtly sinister villain coming to prick the balloons of these serenely comfortable characters. Hitch seems a little too beguiled by the trappings of the middle-classes, so the film becomes somewhat weak-willed - a satire without much bite, and a thriller without too many thrills. Wright and Cotten are terrific, selling the discomforting incestual overtones of their relationship.

I had higher expectations for this one. The film was enjoyable with a couple of things that threw me off. Wright's character in particular, nearing the end of the film with the detectives out of the way she has a dilemma to face concerning uncle Charlie. It seems she made a choice but then she doesn't follow up on it. This leads to a very sudden ending, that leaves a lot to be desired. On the whole the directing is alright. I've seen Hitchcock do better in earlier work.

While his works from the 30s were still a little uneven and rough-around-the-edges, this is his first film were all the Hitchcockian elements come together perfectly. A suspenseful ride from start to finish, with amazing camerawork (especially the use of shadows), great acting and a great script. Note the constant themes of duality throughout (Two Charlies, two detectives, a nightclub called 'until two' etc.) Altogether, both a great thriller and great character drama.

One of Hitchcock's best executed films, although not as glitzy as some it more than makes up for it with a great pace and terrific performance from both Cotten and Wright. Joseph Cotten does fine as the unassuming and unlikely villain because his manner is such that he wouldn't be the prime suspect. Light, shadow, menace, pretense, deception, whatever; the scenes of domestic bliss are really what this movie was about. I think I was impressed by that because, for once, Hitch created on-screen love that resembled the kind he actually knew, rather than the painful starcross'd/unrequited kind he normally put out there. Basically, I'm saying I like this one because it's the one Hitch piece NOT made for people like me. The child acting was shit, as it was in that era, and was the sole weak point.

This movie is pretty much Alfred Hitchcock 101. I guess this is when he was less experienced and confident, not venturing into over-the-top horror like The Birds, or making cameo appearances. Beautifully directed and photographed, superbly acted, especially Wright and Cotten, and thematically intriguing (incest subtext!). I think this presages films from The Night of the Hunter to American Beauty. Interesting too is a shot of couples dancing at a ball, that appears a few times here, including the very beginning of the film, that almost certainly inspired the beginning of Mulholland Dr. The well-established parallels with Dracula, intentional or not, are also fascinating.

One of Hitch's less potent thrillers, "Shadow Of A Doubt" is definitely worth seeing but it lacks the artistic touch of most of his films and is not a directorial achievement for the master. It is about the co-existence of good and evil in society but also in the very same person, a theme used in many of his films; here, though, it ends up being a fight between the two and, inevitably, sails towards conventionalities.

Although it may not rank among Hitchcock's finest directorial works, he still manages to create his trademark aura of suspense and constant menace, aided by a well-formed mystery in the core of the story. However, the ending is definitely disappointing and clichéd.

A well-enacted, tightly scripted thriller. Teresa Wright holds the film with her excellent acting. The rest of characters just support her. She shows the turmoil of the mind torn between love and justice superbly. I wish Joseph Cotten's character had equal depth and expression. Would have loved to see his character's dilemma between love for his niece and self-protection. Would love to see more of his paranoid world-hating self that made him commit the crimes. Nevertheless, a good thriller.
