The first of what would become an impressive succession of movies by Saura documenting traditional music, and there is a freshness and ebullience here that he never quite recaptured--the dances are more colorful and varied, and there's a much wider variety of musical forms, moods and textures than with what is usually thought of as flamenco. Witnessing the performances of Manolo Sanlúcar and Paco de Lucía is an incredible experience, and the whole thing is capped off by--who else?--Rocío Jurado.
