Fun in an archaic way. The dance scenes are still pretty amazing.

An entire movie musical told from the perspective of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast - yet too earnest and bombastic to be anything but endearing. A masterpiece of kitsch with one hell of a barn-raisin'.

If you can look past the very old-fashioned and uncomfortable gender roles and misogyny in this film, it's quite cute, in that '50s way. The song aren't really that great, musically or lyrically, but they're not bad. I was much more impressed with the dancing. There was some seriously impressive choreography involved. So, yeah, it was nice enough, but only for musical fans, I'd say.

The gender politics seem prehistoric, and that's part of the fun for me - looking at all this bad breeding in its jovial harmony may even inspire a postmodern reflex in today's audience: it's like they can't be serious, and yet they are. Some sort of camp classic.

Once you get past the questionable premise (brothers from an isolated farm kidnap their ladies fair, and the ladies reconcile themselves to it), it's a good slice of entertainment, with some top-notch numbers, the rousing barn-raising and the haunting "Lonesome Polecat" being among the most memorable. Admittedly, it's a bit light on character, and a few outdoors scenes were too obviously filmed in the studio, but it's funny enough, and colorful enough, to pull itself through.

Some good songs, and the barn-raising dance features some stunning choreography. And the colors looked nice. But the humor is terrible, almost every gag made me groan miserably. As for the characters, I mostly hated them. Worst of all is the film's reprehensible morality. The brides are taken hostage, but fall in love with their captors anyway, cuz gals just wanna settle down and have babies. The brothers will do something horrible, slightly redeem themselves, and do something horrible again.

A pretty fun Technicolor romp about male stupidity, kidnapping and the Stockholm syndrome. If that sound like something you might want to skip, the dance-off in the middle of the film is the highlight.

The music & choreography are pretty great. The barn-raising sequence is particularly memorable. The Stockholm Syndrome part, not so much. Thankfully, Milly acts as the conscience of the film to call out some of the questionable bits, rendering the plot to a silly vehicle for quality song & dance. "Bless your beautiful hide" has such cringe-worthy lyrics, but boy does it get stuck in my head. Thankfully, I respect my wife enough otherwise that she doesn't mind me scooping her up while singing it.

The narrative sucks, the moral is confused and stupid and the singing is merely ok. Despite all of this the characters are somehow fun to watch and the set pieces that make up about 2/3 of the film are absolutely wonderful. Great choreography and use of colour and the songs have such strange lyrics that they're entertaining despite their faults. Those things alone are reason enough to watch this and laugh at the absurd resolution.

A powerful vibrant and energetic musical. Brilliantly choreographed and Russ Tamblyn is (as usual) outstanding value. Some decent songs and a few duds.. Nothing else quite like it. Quite a charming 50's musical.

Just pure enjoyment wise this is probably a bit better than this, and some of the numbers are good (especially the barn raising scene, which is a highlight), but there's a lot of it that is problematic to say the least and is ultimately presented too sympathetically (though there is at least some lip service given to the issues.)

A fun musical with an extremely uncomfortable plot in 2019. Stockholm Syndrome. Fav scene: barn dance with barn raising right after.

As Tom Scharpling would say, "Oh boy." I like the barn raising scene.

Choreography to die for. Everything else is...typical musical. Plus a dash of Stockholm syndrome for good measure.

Assuming you are capable of looking past the terribly archaic and misogynistic undertones of the film's story, the dance choreography and numbers in the show are absolutely fantastic and worth a watch.

Watching this movie sure brought back memories from my college days when i was fortunate enough to play Mr. Bixby in the FC production. I love all the songs, although i didn't recognize a few of them because our version had other songs. A great family movie for sure!!!!
