Despite Dewaere's explosive performance, the movie is pushed by the plot like a broken car rather than moving on its own. Not that it's bad, just a bit conventional, not brilliant. Speaking of brilliant, there is another french Thompson's adaptation, Coup de torchon, that is absolutely mind-blowing.

Série noire looked from the start that it's going to be a tough sell. Bad acting and senseless characters in a story that develops too slowly. Most of the parts that weren't uninteresting came off as unbearable. Will not accept nor understand the probable score of 82.

he lead performance is great, the pulpy Thompson plot works well with appropriately despicable characters and the film certainly crafts an appropriate atmosphere. It's a very good film with elements that should appeal to me more, but even though I did enjoy it quite a bit, it never fully engrossed me. Something about it just felt off, like all the elements didn't quite fit right.
