90s social commentary tackling the nature of celebrity and the media. Kathleen Turner is great to watch, even if the first half of the film is devoid of any suspense or intrigue because of the straightforward way it's played. Once we get into the courtroom we can understand what Waters is getting at and why the set-up was done that way. Apart from making a point about fame, this film is a bit one-note and a one-woman show... everyone else is kind of annoying and in the way.

A darkly humorous account of suburban murders, brimming with irony and conflicting tones. It's pretty fun for the most part and not many other directors would make a film like this, though the satire and humour isn't as strong as it could be, and a lot of the scenes (especially towards the end) feel somewhat abbreviated. Kathleen Turner is a hoot as the killer mother, I wish she was my mum.

The sweet spot of John Waters movies, probably of his entire career. Not his best movie but the most watchable/rewatchable. Stunt-casts galore, but Waters didn't forget to write a script, either.

Pitch perfect send up to true crime dramas. What makes it perfect is Water's reverence for made for TV movies and to America's own brand of insanity; Turner is just as pin point accurate.

Unabashedly burlesque; a rampant but attentive and smart ridicule of "classifications", conformity, (american) double moral and film conventions (just to mention a couple of things...). It seems like an inebriated Solondz-film on a stormy theatre stage, and it's brilliantly self-controlled in all its mischievous imagination and rabidity. Stunningly funny.

Suburban domesticity and psychosis is a rich relationship explored here on the screen not for the first time. Waters' perversion is that we root for the killer, who embodies both the suburban picturesque and its typical counterpart in iconic pictures like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Thinking about socialising psychosis leads to speculation about high-functioning sociopathic killers; speaking of, it could be surely offered as a counterpart to American Psycho in that respect.

it's fine. it doesn't really work that well as a critique of the glorification of violence in the US culture, and it's not overly funny, but it's just fine.

The sermon on capital punishment was the funniest part. Serial Mom might be a satire of American celebrity culture & middle-class "normality", but neither the characters nor plot have enough depth for any substantial commentary. The start of the murders coincides with the (effective) start of the film, but with no prior indication or snapping point. The trial portrays the US justice system as a farce. The cast is great, but the film doesn't offer much beyond that. A few laughs, but quite dated.

John Waters' best film, without question. Unlike his other films, it's actually watchable from start to finish, and truly fun for the whole family. While his other movies all have great scenes here and there, they mostly meander without strong storylines. Serial Mom is different in that it's consistently well written, funny, and entertaining. I think it's also his most clever and insightful film he's ever done as well, particularly his commentary of the legal system.

Hilarious parody that goes surprisingly dark at times, it never loses sense of what it is and a delightfully creepy and hammy performance by Turner ties everything together.

It's so good I could shit! I thought I had this pastiche of 50s-style family entertainment/slasher film pegged after about 20 minutes, but the story and setpieces go in slightly different directions than what would be expected. It's John Waters playing the mainstream into a more twisted, cynical direction, and Kathleen Turner ties it together with a brilliant central performance.

I never use the "P" word out loud, let alone write it down... but in the case of this movie, I must say it was nearly perfect! Serial Mom is one of those hidden gem movies that many people probably don't hear about. It was released as an HBO movie and I've come to adore it over the years. It's based on a true story and follows a nearly perfect (there's that word again) suburban mother and the killing spree that she goes on...

This seemed a little too smooth and polished for Waters and it seems to produce some overly broad results. Still Turner is great and there is some decent comedy from the supporting roles, particularly Lake.
