At the time, I made the mistake of watching the James Foley ISIS video in its entirety, so I admit I still get a little touchy. It's emotional: so I suppose it's predictable for this film on the subject to fall into an Us VS Other stock lack of complexity. What this film does right, though, is interweave the globetrotting professional spy and the Rye family's slow attempt to raise enough money for the Daesh's ransom, which is realistic and dramatic by nature of its banality.

Not only because of its subject matter, but also because of its over-familiarity, it's a film that's not exactly easy to enjoy. If neither those things nor the melodrama trappings bother you... well, then it's actually pretty good.

Traditional but sober and very well-made. 15 points extra for the brilliant final onscreen quote.

Gripping and thought-provoking though also a bit conventional in its style.

It's hard to believe that evil like this exists. Hard to watch... Excellent performance by Smed - it seemed very real and authentic. *Good
