Toni lives with her father, writer Matthew Martin, in the Sequoia forests of California. While walking, she finds and brings home, a small puma which she calls 'Gato' and a young fawn, called 'Malibu'. The three become friends which violates the normal rules of nature. After a few years, Toni and her dad leave and Gato and Malibu are returned to the wild. They do their animal things, but the two are still friendly. (imdb)

It's simplistic and stilted but something about it hooks you.

Sequoia is a unique animal movie for it's time. It's a movie one could easily think was made by Disney in the 50s, except it was made in the mid-30s with no Walt in sight. The humans are only guest performers. The true stars are 'Gato' the mountain lion and his friend since childhood, 'Malibu' the deer. It's a wonder they got so many magical scenes with two such difficult animals to work with. And in the same shots too! This really is a warm feel-good movie!
