On September 11, 1857, in an unspoiled valley of the Utah territory--and in the name of God--120 men, women, and children were savagely murdered. Who ordered the massacre, and why, has been hidden in a cloak of secrecy and conspiracy. And the reputation of one of this nation's mightiest religious figures has been preserved and protected. This film is based on historical events. (Slow Hand Releasing)

A comically exaggerated chunk of bald-faced anti-Mormon propaganda. Cain, who clearly has an axe to grind, takes true historical events and surrounds them with completely wrong details. The basics (the massacre, some of the character names) are accurate. The smaller points (the motives, the doctrine) are all wrong. The Mormons shown here don’t talk, act, or pray the way real Mormons do or ever did. The terrible acting, dialogue, and story structure don't help, either.

This film raises a lot of poignant questions, mainly: did September Dawn really utilize its ratio of film time to blood atonements made? Could there have been more? To sappy music perhaps? ...deep shit, man. deep shit.

Wow, checked the history, all I can say is WOW! They've got a lot to account for! Love the movie, although gory, I thought it was portrayed very accurately.

There is a great epic film to be made about the Mountain Meadows Massacre. *September Dawn*, however, is a mess, and in all ways: the direction is plodding, the script is atrocious, and - as for the acting: Jon Voight richly deserves the "Razzie" for which he was nominated. This film has a place of honor on my personal "10 Worst Films I've Seen This Year" list.
