I love this movie. This is one of those movies that nothing really happens and its about something that's not considered exciting but I was enraptured the whole time.

Surprisingly touching drama. Yeah, it's formulaic but the formula is used for a reason. It works.

This is truly one of my favorite films of all time. The capturing of the dynamic between father and son is so perfect and well-acted by Mantegna and Pomeranc. Ben Kingsley and Lawrence Fishburne also play memorable roles in this just plain awesome film.

Another mediocre film about what Hollywood thinks chess is.

The nineties is when I got into movies, and I have many favorites from this decade. But I have to say that many films from back then have dated rather poorly. This chess drama is decent enough, but very by the numbers, and now that we have the vastly superior 'The Queen's Gambit', we might as well forget about it entirely.

this kind of movie has become extinct. a movie that's sweet without saccharine and filled to the brim with character actors doing a great job pouting. there's a level of class in its production that's atypical for such standard family fare. the score is obnoxious and intrusive. Laurence Fishburne rules in this.

Needed more of that Chessper Hauser kid. "His parents gave him to me!" lol

I'm probably a bit biased towards this one as I'm an avid chess player, but I love the way that this is shot. It's also very well acted and the characters seemed real enough compared to their real life name sakes.

A riveting look at the suspenseful world of chess. No, but really. It's pretty good.

An absolutely fantastic drama; warm, human, exciting, and terrifically acted from all parties, including the relatively inexperienced kid. It can be viewed as a thrilling sports-type movie with chess taking the place of athletics, but more accurately it's a portrait of the pressures we place on people to succeed, and how people react to and overcome them. I must have watched it a hundred times when I was a kid.

On the back of the great Queen's Gambit series, this was extremely "meh". Perhaps it hasn't dated very well, but for a film that also has a great cast, it felt a little wasted.

The writing of this is fine, despite having plenty of Hollywood cliches. The acting overal is outstanding. The directing is sufficient. All enough so this could have been a decent film, were it not that it suffers from an overbearing sentimental score that drags the movie down immensely.

Evil Chess Teacher to Evil Chess Student: "Come Snedley, I must further psychologically torture you to mold you into the perfect chess killing machine. Mwahahahahaha!" But really, I was annoyed how they used the triumphant music for over half the movies runtime, and the schmaltz is just too strong.

The only thing I enjoyed about this film was the park chess smack talk. If that's a real thing I want in on that.

Who knew a story like this could be this interesting. Although toward the end it does go a bit hollywood, it is an intriguing watch and Pomeranc is really good in displaying his feelings. Really enjoyed this one as a former chess player.

A beautiful, moving, and strangely real film, Searching for Bobby Fischer might not do the best job at avoiding cliche, but other than that its only flaw is the rather expensive choice of casting the great Ben Kingsley in a rather unimpressive role.

Well acted by all involved. At the end of the day it's a movie about chess. That should tell you if you will enjoy it or not.

This is a fell good movie, but I was never drawn into it, I really didn't find it interesting and with a real conflict, I thought it was bland.

Made almost entirely out of Spielberg moments.

Gave me nothing. Nothing strikingly bad to be found here, just a thoroughly predictable, by-the-numbers plot and a hagiography rather than a believable portrait of little Waitzkin (no wonder this one's based on his father's book). Nicely shot by first-timer Zaillian.

Exhilarating film encompassing multiple fascinating studies of obsession, ethical behaviour and blind brilliance in a particular field -- wrapped up in a fascinating study of both the appeal of chess, and how the various levels of play reflect elements of humanity. Performances are superb all round, especially Mantegna, Allen and Kingsley, and Pomeranc's completely natural, guiless performance grounds everything around him. Climactic championship match will have you on the edge of your seat!

If you have played chess or like playing it you must watch this movie. Movies having geniuses always make for a good watch (e.g. Good Will Hunting, A Beautiful Mind). The movie also very nicely touches the problems of fame, parent pressures, etc.

Well made and acted 90s drama. The film is predictable, but good.

Interesting for the chess world minutiae, if you're interested in that; a bit sappy though.

Somewhat classier than the usual dramas from the 90's with kid protagonists. All the cliches were there, including a James Horner soundtrack, but nothing felt too excessive.

enjoyable film, but rather narrow in scope; Joe Mantegna carried off the toughest role well

I'm horribly biased because I love chess and it's pretty badly underrepresented in the world of film. This was pretty good. The acting was great, and the "chess-speak" isn't dumbed down too much. I loved seeing the blitz games in famous "chess Meccas" like Washington Square. My one complaint is that Bruce Pandolfini is nowhere near as severe as Kingsley plays him (in fact, he's probably one of the nicest guys on earth), but I guess you need that conflict in order to make the film work.
