solid thriller progression but kind of meh character work

You can see the inversion of the Memories of Murder writer-director team at work here. Shim's human drama takes a more prominent role than Bong's social commentary, before they both extrapolate the circumstances to the extreme as in Memories of Murder.

It's clear what this movie is trying to do; by first giving the backstory about why a fishing boat takes an assignment to smuggle illegal immigrant, it tries to humanize the crew and deepen their relationships, before they commit a horrible act, tensions start to grow and things gets worse and worse. But unfortunately doesn't succeed in this, because most of the crew still are stock characters and after the turn the nuances are undone by turning characters into simple good and bad guys.

Gripping tale. The very very end was nonsense and pointless. Very well told and coherent story.
