Remember when I was overly worried about how "Scream"(1996) would hold up after years of being referenced and parodied in pop culture in things like "Scary Movie"(2000), turns out, like most franchises, it was the sequel that was ripe to be lampooned. While my enjoyment may have been skewed by intrusive thoughts of jokes that never came, such as expecting Omar Epps to be stabbed in the ear with a stranger's penis, however when compared with slashers of the time, it's still a solid watch.

The first Scream was clever and self-aware. This one is self-aware. No movie with both Timothly Olyphant and Liev Schreiber can be all bad. As I was watching it I noticed that the music sounded awfully familiar. "That's the music from Broken Arrow!" I blurted out. So, the most embarrasing thing about this movie turned out to be my own rock solid recollection of a dated Christian Slater movie, but in all honesty, aren't all Christian Slater movies dated?

So I think I kind of like this one more than the original. It honestly feels like Craven made this into a spiritual version of “New Nightmare” of the Elm Street franchise with it’s meta atmosphere and setup. He even pushes the tropey and self aware elements even more so than the original. However, he does this without sacrificing the slasher elements. My only issue with this is it feeling slightly too long, but with what this film was trying to accomplish, who cares. This is a lot of fun.

Scream's runtime was 111 minutes, and it felt so tight, that I didn't feel even one minute of that runtime. Here? The film is fun but it lags. Maybe the issue is a lack of Matthew Lillard? This film feels like a who's who of late-90s acting. This film's biggest crime is Jamie Kennedy's facial hair. Did you know Neve Campbell won against Helen Hunt, Vivica A. Fox, Julia Roberts, and Kate Winslet for Best Actress? Sure, it was a MTV Movie Award, but still feel egregious.

I enjoyed this a lot more than most people seemed to. It's not quite as clever as the first and it is quite predictable unfortunately. But maybe that was the point? That it was suppose to fall victim to what it's message is? Either way, I was still quite entertained and I actually loved the last act. The kills are still shot really well and the pacing and tension are excellent. The car scene in particular was really well done. Well acted and shot sequel in my opinion.

Scream 2 is at its best in the opening act when Craven is wilfully butchering the genre he helped to revitalise the previous year, and generally screwing with the audience. The meta misleads and self-commentary are still a lot of fun (zany casting, disjointed stings, doppelganger characters, inversions and parodies of the original). Besides that, it's all a bit of a flabby, silly mess, and even calling itself out for consciously retreading the same formula can't absolve the diminishing returns.

Craven was already headed on the same metatextual trajectory when he made New Nightmare in 1994, which took Freddy crossing over to attack the filmmakers in the "real" world. There's a difference here in the Scream movies where an all-new slasher killer causes the post-modern irony to be more disguised, and what might be the most ironic thing about these ever more ironic movies is that it resuscitated the entire genre. Spawning countless imitations, the joke is on them!

Scream 2 is pretty much exactly what you'd expect as a follow up to Scream. It's still funny, it's still fairly thrilling and suspenseful, and it's still highly critical of the slasher genre, with sequels being the main target. It doesn't feel as original as Scream did, and it's not quite as enjoyable as a result, but it's still good fun. It's way too long, though, and definitely needed some tighter editing and possibly a more interesting villain.

Balances out the horror and comedy in ways that undermine the effectiveness of each, but I still found it to be a reasonably enjoyable self referential satire. It's nothing special, and a bit dated, but it was mostly somewhat above average.

A nice follow up to the original, tho flawed in many ways. In many ways it tries to be to similar,to the first and at the same time original and it doesn't quite work. Tho, nearly not as bad as the third. Every time i watch the third it makes me think how good this once actually is.

Loving the first film, no ending in cinema history has pissed me off more than the one in this otherwise solid film. Give me a fucking break! Anyway, it has some legitimately suspenseful scenes (opening, car scene) and goes further with the paranoia and the meta elements. Also, the theme in the score reserved for Dewey is nice and his interactions with Gale are pretty fun. But, dammit, THAT resolution. Don't get me started.

At one point we discover that the murders are following the same pattern as the original film, suggesting that the characters could do actual detective work and save the next victim and/or catch the killer. Well-cast sequel is unfortunately lumbered with a far too smarmy and self-satisfied screenplay, which ultimately forgets to function as a genuine horror film, instead playing most of the situations for laughs. It is still fun hanging out with this cast of characters (and the indestructible "Deputy Dewie" is an especially fun character), but this is an ultimately flabby and silly affair, with a finale aping the conclusion of a different horror franchise, but bringing nothing new to the table.

Shot quickly after the original to capitalize on the newfound interest in horror, Scream 2 picks up directly where the original story left off. The technical aspects have greatly improved, especially the acting and camera work, and there are a few great set pieces, including one involving Campbell in a college stage production of Agamemnon, but it suffers from bad Scooby Doo style twists and reveals that are only magnified in the third and weakest installment

Better than I remembered! Is it as fun, tense or conceptually strong as the original? Of course not but it’s still a great ride. What it lacks in camera tricks and fluidity it makes up for by being much more violent and bloody kinda like Halloween II in that regard(the point I know!). The opening sequence is a riot. The way the plots unravel are just a little limp especially in comparison to the original.

Wes Craven, as usual, is one of the best when it comes to balancing humor, self-awareness, and some honestly superb jump scares all into one movie and it all works really well again here. I think it will forever be impossible to surpass the original just because that one is so structurally solid and classic, but this one did a good job of lightly shading in our returning characters with some depth, and giving us a ton of expendable ones for fun. Plus, Smith's intro scene character was a riot.

Many of the setups and kills here are tense and effective (particularly the Gale-Dewey section), but the new characters are no more than typical horror stereotypes lacking in any of the expected meta-commentary, and returning characters are listless approximations of their more three-dimensional Scream counterparts. It's particularly unfortunate that Williamson overlooks that the Sidney of the first film clearly would've killed or at least horribly maimed the unconscious Ghostface in the car.

I really don't get all the hate for this. It's a great film for all the same reasons the first one was. In fact, I think some elements worked better at points here than they did in Scream, namely the self-referential meta-criticisms of the first film, race (especially in relation to black people) in horror films, film sequels, and political correctness (especially the 90s "violence in media" cultural witch hunt). This is a brilliant, underrated sequel with some inspired casting choices to boot.

Tough to score, because a lot of its problems, like how it reprises entire scenes from the original, seem like they could be meta-comments on sequel predictablility. It would fit in with the film school discussion on the merit of sequels and other self-referential aspects, but meta-jokes or not, it's still bad in a lot of spots. The cast is an improvement on the first, especially Schreiber in an expanded role. There are still many comedic sides to the film, but the original's wit is slipping.

Sequels can be hard to do, but Scream 2 seems like a confusing mix of comedy and something close to horror. It doesn't really manage to be scary at any point and all the characters are terrible stereotypes here. It takes the concept of the first movie and makes open fun of it, but it's courting a bit too close to the Scary Movie -territory to seem effective. That being said, it's still an entertaining and fun movie to watch. Just not truly a horror movie. Also Dewey is the man.

The college campus functions as a giant stage on which this theater of cruelty is set. The direction heightens and embalms the emotions - it's not far from Twin Peaks in terms of its soap opera-ish disorientation. Through the uncanny fluidity of the camera and the first-class work of the actors, a musical and poetic quality develops that transcends the slasher genre. And the opening does for auto-critique more than what Haneke tried in the same year. The absolute highlight of this series.

It is much more of a self-referential comedy than anything else, and not a very smart one, but comparatively subtle and with one of the most hilarious endings I've seen in a while. Hadn't the soundtrack underlined this continually, had also the cut been shorter, I would have found almost nothing to be annoyed by, but plenty to praise the movie for. A very rare horror sequel to improve on the ideas of the original. The intent would have been to satirize the horror sequel. So by definition alone this film should not have worked as well as it did. If you like the first film, you're bound to like this as well. It has all of the humor and witt of the first installment with a new meta-filled story. It's take on sequels still stand fairly well, and I think anyone who's a fan of the first will be just fine here. You still get Sidney Prescott kicking ass while looking good doing it, and Gale Weathers being as snarky as she is likable. Not quite as fresh as the first, but not too bad. I give 8 final girls out of 10.

2. One of the best movie intros I've seen - a film within the film with meta references, charisma between the two black "leads," comments on the entertainment industry - awesome. Following is a hilarious and ingenious first half of the film. Starts dragging slightly towards the end in comparison to the first film, and I didn't like the killing of Randy. Maybe it may have been better for him to be killed in the last film in fact as the 3rd film alluded, but that may have made Scream 2 too light.

I still liked this one overall. Ending was a bit dumb, and killing off Jamie Kennedy I didn't see coming.

Worst twist ever. At least Scream 3 had an interesting idea, this just feels like a tired, uninspired sequel that the original Scream would have made fun of.

It's a sequel, so, of course, there's going to be a certain amount of 'seen it', but it's really quite well done, and there's just enough new stuff to keep things interesting. The humour's also the same, without feeling same old, same old.

This one isn't quite as bad as some people make out, but it certainly isn't as good as the first. There's some nice suspense scenes, Dewey is still a wonderful character, and Liev Schriber is good in his role. Still, the movie has some annoying moments, particuarly the mishandling of Randy's death and the absolutely ridicolous ending.
