In School for Scoundrels, Jon Heder plays Roger, a beleaguered New York City meter maid who is plagued by anxiety and low self esteem. In order to overcome his feelings of inadequacy, Roger enrolls in a top-secret confidence-building class taught by the suavely underhanded Dr. P (Thornton). Aided by his assistant Lesher (Duncan), Dr. P uses unorthodox, often dangerous methods, but he guarantees results: Employ his techniques and you will unleash your inner lion. (MGM)

I really didn't expect to like this at all, mostly because I can't stand Jon Heder. Surprisingly, it doesn't suck, and Heder isn't terrible. It's a bit standard, but definitely enjoyable. It would be much funnier with an R rating, as Thornton is hindered by the PG-13 neutering. Barrett is cute after an awful turn in Poseidon, and the supporting cast is strong enough to carry the movie when it sputters (Stiller and Duncan, mainly). Ultimately forgettable, but it's funny enough.

Wait to watch this in an environment where you can fast forward the dull bits.

Could have used a whole lot more Jon Glaser and a whole lot less everything else.

School for Scoundrels is not a good movie after it changes direction, which is about twenty minutes in. It begins as a cynical movie whose target is Jon Heder's loser character. It ends as a romantic comedy that forgot jokes belong in comedies. Billy Bob Thorton is fun to watch when he makes fun of people, but that's about the only enjoyment I got out of it. Skip it and watch the original, if only to say that you've seen the original and unleash the hipster within.

Jon Heder reprises his role as a nerd with shitty hair. What has he done that's good? Nothing? No? Really? Ugh.

This movie starts off great but then looses it way in the final act. Thorton and Heder make a good competing pair.

"Asked only to regurgitate prior performances, Heder dutifully performs his bumbling Napoleon Dynamite shtick and Thornton berates people with caustic Bad Santa/Bad News Bears nastiness." - Nick Schager

Mistakes - 1) When Roger is drunk and is getting into bed, his alarm clock changes from 11:39 back to 11:38. 2) When David Cross and John Heder are discussing how well John has been doing in the class, David's hot dog goes from having a bite out of it, to being whole again.

It's bad even for a movie that doesn't even try to be good.

A pleasant surprise. Pretty funny with a nice cameo from Stiller. A easy way to waste an hour and half.

A pathetic nerd evolves into a suave man in order to swoon a woman. That's pretty much all there is to say about it, there's nothing exceptional or terrible about it.

With a few laughs along the way, I find my problem with this film is that I really don't enjoy the kind of thing it does. I don't like watching films about embarrassment and humiliation, no matter if the antagonist gets his comeuppance in the end. It's just uncomfortable for me to watch. It also makes stretches that are hard for me to stomach. Finally, will Jon Heder ever escape the spectre of Napoleon Dynamite?

This is the movie that proved that, Napoleon Dynamite aside, Jon Heder was never meant to be a leading man. He's quite terrible, but he's not helped by a story and script. The sensibility of this story is quite nasty and mean-spirited. It's all a little too cynical for its own good. Barely a comedy.
