This parody is a great comedy that combines many different other movies' plots into one movie. It mocks these movies such as scream, dawsons creek, and i know what you did last summer. it is extemely funny and the first time i watched it i laughed almost the entire time.

I can't stand it when people say that the Scary Movie franchise was good when the Wayne's brothers were running the show. The thing that upsets me the most about this film is that Scream was already a much more subtle spoof of the slasher genre. Do we really need a shot for shot spoof of a spoof with fart jokes?

This one might not be the first spoof movie, but it is the first in a swift devolution of the entire subgenre to become more grotesquely terrible with each subsequent year. Friedberg and Seltzer may have simply been trying to emulate the type of rapid fire, pop culture heavy humor that made "Airplane!" a winner, but they did it without any tact or talent. This one is the least offensive movie they've done, even the successful jokes are low hanging fruit, but at least there ARE successful jokes.

They spoof a lot of horror movies but when they do "Scream" it is spot on all the way through. Extremely raunchy, but it features Cheri Oteri in what is probably her only appearance in a feature film.

Maybe I have a terrible sense of humor, but I think this movie has some funny scenes in it. I have to say, however, that it's more than just a little bit idiotic to parody movies that are basically parodies themselves. Say, has anyone made a movie that specifically parodies parody movies yet? They could call it... "Parody Movie".

Undoubtably and by far the best movie Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg ever had their fetid names attached to, it throws about a billion punchlines and spoofs at you to where even though like 70% may miss you’ll still laugh a fair number of times. Works best if you’ve recently watched (or are very familiar with) Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Worst aged moment isn’t any of the racist/homophobic jokes - it’s the Matrix spoof in the final fight scene. CUH-RINGE!

Both Scary Movie 1 & 2 were some of the biggest comedy hits of their era. I was also the target audience. However, this film has no aged gracefully. While the "throw everything at the wall" attempt will always yield varying results, there's just some stuff that doesn't work nearly 20 years later.

It is pretty juvenile, but by sticking to a steady story (although making a parody of a parody (Scream) is kinda weird), it kept a coherence which escapes most of the spoof movies. If you were in 14-18 range in 2000, it must have been real fun though; similar to how much I enjoyed Airplane or Naked Gun back when I was a kid.

What Miramax/Dimension achieved with Scary Movie was unprecedented: a financially successful parody series based on an existing franchise they released and that was still profitable(Scream). Since Scream had already engaged in a humourous deconstruction of horror, S.M was already redundant on release, so there was nothing left to do other than be silly and obnoxiously riff on popular scenes from contemporary slashers. It isn't clever in the least, but there are a few dumb laughs.

Can a parody of a movie which itself already a spoof of the genre be successful? Apparently, yes. I still think this (and Not Another Teen Movie) is a great spoof that holds up much better than anybody gives it credit for.

Mistakes - 1) Near the beginning Buffy tears off her dress and throws it on the ground. When they walk away there's no sign of it. 2) The guy who stands up through the car's sun-roof, during the flashback, is holding an empty bottle, but when he is at the top of the car the bottle is nearly full. 3) When the bottle is dropped in the car, it hits Cindy on the head and falls down in front of her. When Greg gets out he now has the bottle.

Even as an obvious spoof, no way this film gets made these days (the term "non-PC" is probably appropriate). To be clear, I am not saying that this is a good or bad thing. In any case, to really appreciate what this film is doing (i.e. to appreciate the humour) you had to be around in the mid-late 90s during the resurgence of slasher films. "Lose the cape, it's way too 90s horror."

Scary Movie's approach to parodying the slasher genre is to inundate the audience with humor. I don't think more than a minute goes by in this film without some sort of over-the-top joke. To the film's credit, I found some of the gags quite witty and funny, but most of the time, Scary Movie goes for predictable, convenient low-brow laughs and relies on flatulence (with no other context but the flatulence itself) to pass the time. The time passes SLOWLY.

Upon rewatch, I am a little bit more lenient on Scary Movie. I do think there was an honest attempt translate Scream to a more general audience who didn't know the context of two decades of paint-inside-the-lines slasher movies. However, the rest of Scary Movie is still terrible garbage that, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, thinks it's the funniest thing since the invention of the one-liner.

It's not that "Scary Movie" is bad, far from it, with some of its more inspired gags resembling the subvertive wit of "Airplane!" in their inanity, but more often than not the film is utterly content in its own laziness, opting to reference other, better movies instead of satirising the genre as a whole, something its stylistic forbears did flawlessly, making for a viewing experience that's just not all that fulfilling. Still, what works definitely works. A mixed bag of a comedy, to be sure.

Scary Movie represents the birth of the modern "spoof," which is doing the exact same thing as another movie but adding farts to it. This isn't exclusive to these Movie Movies, either; SNL has become repeating the news with dumb wigs, and that's only slightly worse than the alternative of tepid Apatow improv by women proving they're also capable of pooping and farting. This movie is terrible.

Scary Movie might have more misfires than hits, but because it throws the kitchen, the kitchen sink, the food in the pantry, the utensils, the placemats, and the rest of the house at you in terms of jokes, there are bound to be some jokes you find funny. It's not as smart as Scream or as scary as pretty much any slasher out there, but it's dumb and funny and if it sounds like it appeals to you, it probably will. That's all there is to say.

There are two ways in which this movie attepts at humour. The first is to reference a horror movie, insisting that merely namedropping something is funny. The second is having random throwaway jokes at the expense of minorities.
