The gradual deteriation of the Saw series continues with the fourth installment which does nothing other than continue the downward spirial. The editing is terrible, the flashbacks are confounding and the whole experience never really gets entertaining, it's just one gore-fest after another. There's just too much wrong to make the series valid anymore, mainly as this installment recycles a lot from the previous films. If the series is to succeed it needs a totally fresh start. Rehashed and dull.

How do they keep doing it! It seems as though each Saw gets so much more in depth than the last! Who would be sitting in their office thinking of ways to torture someone who may have done things we could have potentially done ourselves! The Saw movies really have you rethinking all of the decisions you make in life for the purpose of not having to be put in such a vile situation as punishment of your choices. It's really a scary movie! I wouldn't reccommend it for children.

Pretty god damn awful, I could barely even follow the plot this time with so many generic similar characters, none of which I cared about. Jigsaw as a villain makes less sense with each passing movie, and none of the traps this time around were even interesting in the slightest. This franchise lost steam already in the first film. The fact that they continue to churn these out and receive massive gross revenue from today's movie audience is really sad.

"IV" requires a keen eye on previous installments. That it all comes together completely is really unknown. The whole anthology seems to be one long, incomprehensible, impossible plot that involves characters to act on the nose - and so it's all ludicrous, but "4" is the most interesting. It's just full of too many holes to figure out. By its crammed ending, I didn't know what it was trying to make of everything that's happened in all four movies so far. "Saw" is simply a gore-filled soap opera.

The weakest of the original seven Saw movies. Saw III really didn't leave the franchise with anywhere to go and so this movie is really grasping at straws to find something still worth pursuing. The protagonist is essentially the only remaining person of any note from the previous films who happened to still be alive and the big ending twists are all uninterestingly dull. There are some cool death game moments though.

understood SHIT! Whannell leaves and the whole thing just gets derailed, with a 93min backstory - no time for gore! - that tries to explain some sort of posterity and legacy left by Kramer (and how he snapped after drug addict accidentally killed his unborn son) and last but actually first of many new traps, now involving cops - Eric is alive, FBI comes in, Rigg plays along to try to find Eric after finding Kerry's body. So badly edited that found out authopsy happens LAST thanks to Wikipedia.

If the first 3 somehow stood as a trilogy, I'd say it's fine collection to the horror genre. However, This one is a glaring example of just the recurring trend in this franchise. We all know they shit these out because they made money, but almost no effort when it to these. It's just a bland and convoluted story arch, covered up with some decent traps, and too many damn twists. Not to say that Donnie Wahlberg's character was iconic, but they could've done so much more with him too.

Never go through an unsecured door is the primary moral lesson that Jigsaw attempts to convey in "Saw IV". I think that says more than I ever could in the remaining 340 characters I have left. "If it's Halloween, it must be Saw" is sounding more and more like a thinly veiled threat every year at this point.

2016: Watched this 3 years ago. Apparently liked it more than the third one, and thought it could've been outright good if it hadn't stuck to S3's bad choice of keeping the grossout factor cranked to 10. Also found the ending weird, but to be honest I can't remember any of the Saw films other than the original. 2022 August rewatch: I had ZERO recollection of watching this until reading this now lol. Lowering score from 52 to 32 'cuz it's a silly, gross mess. X-Japan an inspired outro choice.

Restores the fast-paced plot-weaving of the first two Saws. The way the first film was claustrophobic in that it put us directly in the characters' bone-chilling situations, the third film was claustrophobic in that it was missing something by not expanding further. I kept feeling like there was supposed to be more to the story, more to the action, more to the violence and the horror, but there wasn't. Saw IV fills in those blanks.

Saw IV is not a good movie. I enjoyed all three earlier installments, but this is just a bore. It's not scary or thrilling, and it's not even creative. About the only thing that the filmmakers needed to do correctly was provide us with some innovative traps and puzzles, but they couldn't even do that. Most of the film is a rehash of earlier chapters, and what's new isn't worth seeing. It's for the die-hard fans only, and they'll probably reminisce at the better, earlier films in the series.

More of the same (I'll give this franchise its due - it's certainly consistent) with Jigsaw himself reappearing through a series of flashbacks in a questionable move to humanise the bloke and provide him with some background. Knowledge of the previous films is vital as references to previous characters and shenanigans are aplenty, and considering it's been years since I saw the third I felt like I was rejoining a soap opera I'd abandoned, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt story-wise.

Soundly my least favorite of the series so far. The series' already-overly-frenetic editing style hits a grating fever pitch, it lacks both the puzzle box nature of the first film and the clearly delineated character-based journeys of the next two, and only a couple of the traps are even a little clever.

Spoilers LOL as if you care: it starts out just as pathetically tortureporn as 3 but ends up with more story. I like that it takes place concurrently with 3, im ok with how the "game" is continued. It fails by having to keep track of 4 or 5 timelines to make any sense of it, and while the idea of the stories and backstories might come together in the end they made a jumbled pain in the ass of a movie to watch in the presentation of the multiple timelines.

Thankfully less mindless gore than the last, and they've ditched the stupid twists that worked in the first movie and failed in the next two. However they haven't replaced it with anything resembling a plot. Even the torture-porn has gone downhill; characters play Jigsaw's game now for the sake of plot advancement, even when there's loads of ways they could avoid being dismembered. I can't see this franchise ever redeeming itself at this stage.

At this point, the movies officially become interchangeable with regards to watchability. Whereas the first two installments were centered around one giant trap of sorts, the later versions just devolve into a linear "person witnessing a string of traps before getting maimed/killed in the end scene while the subplot/overarching plot moves forward one step/twist."

Jigsaw the moralizing sadist is dead, but the lure of continued box office income compels his spirit to live on through contrivances like flashbacks of "games" he allegedly prepared in advance of his demise. The previous Saw movies were imbecilic, but their plots were intelligible just enough to serviceably link between the torture-death scenes. Saw IV is so incoherent that it fails even the guilty cheap entertainment test.

A tad better then Saw three but nowhere near the horrific nature of the first two. They should have left Jigsaw as the man with Cancer out to prove to people that they should never take things for granted, adding back info this late in the game is just a way to make people have sympathy for Jigsaw. He mindlessly and brutally tortures his victims and then writers try to play the sympathy card.Cancer is never good but using as it a reason to invoke torture is never a good idea either.

The fourth in the series, this is the one that caused alot of longtime fans to discontinue viewing the films as they were feeling that this series is long played out. That is not the case for me, as I really liked some of the continuous camera angles, and the new traps that were given. Saw is not the kind of series that has had to bring its villain back from the dead to have a sequel on its hands and where the horror has stepped down a bit, the story has taken over. Another fine Saw sequel.

I have to say, as cliche as the series is, Saw IV makes good use of the mythology and characters and offers up an exciting entry that stands as possibly the best in the series so far. It makes good use of the main "trial" or game being an hour and a half long, as it works in almost real-time. It's gripping for this fact alone, and Riggs, the main character, is better than most before him. Though it's not a good movie, it's not nearly as bad as its reputation. I recommend seeing it.
